  2. I wanted to do this on November 4th but life got in the way. Why November 4th? Well, on November 4th, 1979, the big news of the day was the takeover of the US Embassy in Tehran, but for me I purchased a virtually 40-year-old car - my first 1940 Ford tudor sedan. An 18-year old carpenter's apprentice who just got laid off after a store remodel was done. Probably was stupid for me at the time to do it. Sure, it was a shell and a "basket case" that was missing a lot of stuff, but the dream was to rod it out since it was missing the engine, transmission, most of the interior, etc. From that point forward I picked up a '40 Deluxe coupe from a salvage yard for some of the stuff I was missing (too bad the body was clapped out and used for rip-rap), then a '40 Deluxe tudor that was complete but had a stuck original 221 V8 (was eventually sold off when I moved to Kansas in the late '90s). It opened the door for me to go to swap meets, rod runs, help start a car club in Wahoo, immerse myself in collecting factory literature, and eventually get into a '55 Ford Victoria and my '63 T-birds. And, yet, after all those years I still have the '40, the '55 and the T-birds. And I'm still scouring swap meets to find parts for it (sold most everything off 11 years ago thinking I wouldn't have a place to put it when I moved back to Nebraska). And so it sits, and waits - I joked it would be my 'retirement project' and that isn't all that far around the corner now. So much for procrastination...so...
I bought my '40 when it was 40 years old (okay, the pieces of windows that survived had date codes of April '40 on them - close enough), and...
I've had my '40 for 40 years now.

200th day to drive Lil Red this year. I haven't been to a single car show and only a handful of cruise nights. Just errands and coffee . That 's what I want to do drive and enjoy !! Later Bill

  4. Mike Meeker volunteered to go up to St Louis with me and haul this one back to his barn.
20191115_125336.jpg Just polished off a couple of roast beast sandwiches and getting ready to head back to SW Missouri.
20191115_113248.jpg Front fenders are relatively straight but quite pitted.
    20191115_113201.jpg
Hood sees pretty straight but the driver's side lower rear is bent slightly inward.
Didn't take any photos of the original grille, but the cast parts will work for a beater.

The current plans for the driveline will be the 221 flatty that I pulled from my '40 stake truck, backed by a Saginaw 4 speed, and an 8" with 3.25 gears out back. Have a dropped '40 axle from Sid, and will run late Ford bolt pattern wheels front and back, most likely another set of American Torq Thrust Originals with 165/80R15's up front and 235/75r15's out back.

  9. The last 2 pics in my post are as current as can be - nothing done to it since 2015. Before that it sat behind my parents' garage for 35 year (top pic). If you've seen it it had to be before fall 1979 or you were trespassing.

OK, 504640.... A little background on the "Candy And Chrome" '40..... Built by Ed Leite (Hayward, Ca).
The coupe was taken apart in 1960, and took 6 years to complete. It features an early Olds with 3 Strombergs, Candy Apple Red lacquer, pearl white Naugahyde interior, and pretty much chrome everything.... complete chrome exhaust, front end, transmission, rear end, etc. The firewall was removed, chromed & re-installed..... the entire frame was chromed !
Found by the previous owner in 2001, the '40 had been stored for years in Northern, Ca. The first picture is a shot of the '40 being shown at the Oakland Roadster show in 1967. After being apart for the last year (for some "deep cleaning", re-chroming of a few pieces, & lowering), I just got it back together last month. The paint is aged down & lacquer checked, but it still "pops" pretty good in direct sun light. I feel pretty lucky to be the current caretaker of a real 1960's Hot Rod survivor !!

Granada 8" and a Posies parallel leaf setup loaded and ready for the 40 panel. ;-)

(Figured this works in this thread, since it's loaded in the back of my '40 stake truck, and destined for the '40 panel. LOL)

I agree... I like the '39 Deluxe best of all... Ironically, my '39 has a '40 Deluxe grille & hood! (Anyone want to trade?)

So... I've been scrolling through this thread for several days now. My wife walked by & asked why I'm looking at pictures of cars that all look the same.
Later I walked by her desk and noticed she was scrolling through a German Shepard web-site...
In retrospect I probably shouldn't have asked her why she was looking at pictures of dogs that all look the same... I'm having dinner at In & Out Burger tonight...

I can't figure how that would work on the rear, though...?

Hi Mark, Yeah, it's '39 so maybe it's different than a '40?... the rears have a "dog-leg" on the one bracket... so it bolts to the back of the frame. the outer bolts to the side of the frame. I'm planning on tucking them in tighter to the body, and just figured I'd have to cut & weld to fit.

I have 2 small (but REALLY bright) L.E.D.s mount in the back windows... They work with each tail light for brakes & turn signals. They're mounted in a little aluminum box with a rubber seal around the glass contact area to keep the light from leaking out. But I like the idea of the initial "pulsing" and might add that feature. I've seen 'em on motorcycles... where do I get one?
