Great find. Get running and start driving. Yes and definitely wide whitewalls.

That looks like the same Model T as on the plaque! Thanks for the link!

There are a few clips of the movie on YouTube. They are recorded from a television. I noticed a couple of Mercs in this clip. It looks like a poorly done American Grafitti knock-off, but it has some nice cars in it.

At 00:18 seconds into the clip, that's the Merc. Even found the old broom handle hood prop in the trunk! That's the previous owner in the brown jacket and blue jeans with the handle bar mustache and long hair. Besides being the Oakland 81 charter president, he also had a few small acting parts in the pictures.

Raise the hood, and look at the wiring that runs across the core support just in front of the radiator, and maybe elsewhere under the hood. If it's modern 16 gauge white wire that is patched in, I owned this car long ago. I sold it and it went to northern California.

It's coming back to me. Take an inspection mirror and look at the pot metal casting grill center section. I seem to remember it was broken or cracked. I put it back together and applied fiberglass on the back side to repair it, then painted it silver. The things we do when we are young, and have little money.

The Merc is a really cool find!
The movie had no shame in knocking off the American Graffiti poster too. Same lettering font, color, design. "Where were you in 62", became "It was heaven in 57". And what's with the Marlon Brand Wild One styled biker?

  14. Buds' Auto Service was a repair shop operation who built good flathead engines in 70's and 80's, Bud had a "T" Tub V8. This 49 Merc might be a car owned by So Cal Evil Ed, looks alot like it.

“Hasn't run in many years, appears to have a Ford flathead and not the correct Mercury flathead with 4" stroke.”

Are you basing this just off looking at stock ford heads? Putting Ford heads on a merc 4” motor gave higher compression IIRC. Only way (that I know of) to tell if it’s a 4” Merc is to measure stroke or pull the oil pan and look at the counterweight hole size

Funnily enough that bike Cisco is seen riding was recently restored by Vintage dreams.
You can see more of the bike on ryan grossmans instagram page 3gknuck. Pretty cool peice of HA history.

There is a quite interesting review of this movie on imdb.com:

A drunken no-talent Max Baer ruined a good script.
    27 January 2017 | by jesse3 – See all my reviews
Allowing Max Baer to direct HOMETOWN was the mistake of a lifetime. I was signed with Jack Nicolson's agent at the time -- as a writer. They loved the script. Max Baer offered to shoot the film immediately and cut me in on one third of the profits. It seemed attractive at the time. I consented, and it was the number one mistake of my life. This drunken, obnoxious no-talent buffoon screamed at the actors for not being more like he was as Jethro in "The Beverly Hillbillies". He turned out to be a drunken no-class ape that disgusted cast and crew alike. To this day I have never known a more dishonest, lying, cheating criminal than Max Baer Jr. His crass, misogynist, woman beating ways soon became known to the town. People soon learned that he threw his ex-wife threw a plate glass window, broke Donna Cheney's arm when he found out that she was having an affair with an actor, was physically ejected from the Playboy Mansion in 1978 for tirelessly groping women, his live-in supposedly committed suicide by shooting herself in the stomach several years ago, and on and on ad-infinitum. He is the worst person that I have ever met in my lifetime -- with no close seconds.

Yeash. Sounds like a class act.

Anyway, cool Merc. Don't be so quick to toss out that flathead without digging into it to see just how warmed over it was, may be hiding some good guts.
As stated above, white wall bias ply would do wonders for the overall appearance of the car (as would a really thorough bath). I would refrain from any heavy modifications and just get it reliably roadworthy and enjoy the hell out of it.

OMG, Luke Skywalker tried to kill his own nephew and now I find out Jethro was a terrible person in real live? My childhood was a lie

Looked all over his IG and couldn’t find it. I might have an old title for the bike that came in the Merc papers. I’ll reach out to those guys and see if the title is a match. Thanks for the note!

Looking for a correct steering wheel for this beauty without luck. Anyone have any thoughts or leads? The one posted by twochops a few years back would have been perfect.

That's the plan down the road (I read the same on the interweb). Getting it ready to run this weekend! I'll keep you updated. Going to keep the paint as-is, and drive it around Oakland. I'm into the chopped look but I'm a purist and can't bring myself to do it. I'll leave that up to the next custodian.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Really glad I found the HAMB!
