hey yall , trying to figure out what trans this is in my 41 chev deluxe AND what it takes to make it quit leaking grease .is this trans stock with vacuum delete ? thnx for your concideration !
im not sure I made my question clear . just what model of transmission . not a name for a tranny . guess there could be a mis understanding .!!
Your transmission appears to be the stock trans for that era Chevy. I don't recall if Chevy used the vacuum assist shift as early as '41, but many/most of them were removed replaced with a standard shift arm. As for the leaks, looks like might be coming from the front bearing retainer. Probably will require removal and inspection to be sure where the oil is coming from. Ray
vcc people said all 41s came with vac assist. but ive never seen one or heard good things about them .BUT don't say that on the vcc right!!
Looks like a 591193 trans, maybe that 6 is really, or should have been, a 5. 41-48 Chevy trans. Check out this old eVil auction and compare... https://www.ebay.com/itm/1941-1948-...=true&nordt=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557
the date code on the transmission is from 19x1, so it's probably original. You can make it stop leaking, by draining the oil. Might be able to seal it up, as well, but we'd need to know a bit more about the leaking symptoms to give a definite answer. Like, is it dripping from some particular place? And are you sure it's the transmission that's leaking?
Seems to me, there's only a single shifter shaft coming from the side cover, instead of two like most of us are used to seeing (?). They are are pre-courser to the Muncie 318 transmissions; just had a small bolt pattern where they bolt to the bell-housing, and the torque-tube driveline connection. The side covers with two shafts even exchange with the Muncie 318 transmissions, like in the case of 49-54 Chevrolet transmissions. Yours looks like it's leaking mostly from the front bearing/bearing retainer (clutch is probably bad also due to the gear oil). Maybe the transmission, or the rear-end are overfilled? That can happen with the torque-tube rear-ends when the front bushing/seal becomes worn out on of the front of the torque-tube. Put a 53-54 Chevrolet transmission in the car, and use a floor shift (I have a couple of those Hurst floor shifts). Good luck. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
I guess I never thought it out squirrel . but ill bet if I do nothing , itll probably fix its self !! as far as the leak that is . then I can swap in a t5 and go for a long drive somewhere . I probably did over fill . never thought that was an issue , but , the vcc guys said to messure x amount .bla, bla . I don't think I can be taught . been filling to the fill plug level since always . so cant be wrong ,right . guess ill try draining and putting in the correct amount . lota debate on what to put in as well . I think I over filled with 90/140 or what ever kragen had . pumping it full of gun grease might be good !! or atf . so many choices and so little brains !
kind of funny how you can spend hours under a car .change mtr. ,bell housing ,frnt sheet metal .a arms ,take pix of the trans. etc, etc, etc, and yet ive never noticed ., looked or seen if there are 2 shafts sticking out of the side !! how does that happen ! when the sun comes up , im gona go look and maybe remember . what was I talking about ??
Like other poster said. These drive lines can swap grease from the trans and the rear axle. Over fill one and it will over fill the other for you. Filling to the bottom of the drain plug hole is a standard measure I thought.
vcc says 1 1/2 pint and never fill to the filler plug level / over fill. guess most of us have been doing it WRONG!! saves a lot of money filling only to the drain level though !!
