Projects 1940 Chevy Sedan SEGA Gasser Build

    I flipped one of my rear springs around and it centered my rear axle. Thanks to who ever gave me the idea.

    Now the real trick will be getting the back end lower with the stock springs! Are yours the 8 leaf packs like my '39 coupe were? If so you might get away with removing about half of the leafs and maybe get it low enough. Here's mine with just the main leaf, and 4 leafs from a '55-'59 Chevy truck front axle.

    Yep it’s got the big 8 leaf pack.
    I’m not sure where it will sit. It was on a jack stand in the photo. Im also rebuilding the bushings and shackles. I’m going to run The 29.5” towel city pie crust slicks, or M/T 29x12.5 tires. I’m also looking at those floater axle spring mounts. They look like the ride height can be adjusted.

    Floaters will give a small amount of adjustment, but not enough to make up for those springs. The Tri 5 Chevy springs are flatter, and lowering springs for the same are flatter yet. In addition to the change in springs on mine, I also welded a 1" box tube to my spring perches so it lowered the rear another 1". A total of about 3.5" lower than it was.

    Are the Tri-5 springs 2” wide?

    Sorry, the '55-'57 are 2". You need '54 or earlier if you want to stay with 1.75" width. But if you keep your 1.75" main leaf you can stack the 2" leafs on top of that to make a pack. That's what I did and it works great. Just need to get 2" spring clips to strap the new pack together.

    I think swapping over to 2” springs is a good idea. I need to redo the spring perches any way. The pinion angle is way off.

    I found a guy south of Portland that has stacks of Tri-5 leaf springs. I can have a set for $25 he said there’s 2 different types some have more leafs.

    Got a few things done today. Skinned my trunk lid and added pins. IMG_3793.JPG

    Took my top loader out of its crate and it looks like I’ll be making custom shift rods for my V-gate shifter.

    I’m putting together a set of custom Delrin bushings for my rear springs at the frame hanger. Zero deflection, super solid, and their smooth as roller skate wheels. Adjustments.JPG

  15. Nice car! I used a big journal 327/T-56, 6 speed/9" in my 40 coupe with mustang style front. Chassis engineering makes nice suspension for the rear. An anti-sway bar is available.

    I have a 1967 small journal 327 but I didn’t think it would have enough power. So I went with a BBC 467.
    I think I’ll keep the 327 for my next project.

    CCOL CAR!! Had a '40 Chevy Coupe when I was 16, built it all in the carpot. Use a '55 Chev. rear end..easy fit!

    The entire front body bolts together, so I made a tilt front end on it just using simple hand tools and a drill.

    292", tunnel ram, magnesium American mags...Hugger Orange...perfect for 1966...you can put C-channel
    between the front cross member and the rails and raise it up however high you like without changing the
    alignment geometry...5 lug hubs from a later passenger car are a direct fit, too. Fun project!

    I was looking around this old grain bin for some scrap pipe to build a bumper. I ended up finding a grain auger that’s inside a 4” pipe. It looks exactly like one of those muffler inserts. IMG_4364.JPG

    I have a few Items that will be added to the dash. I plan to use an additional amber colored light and wire it as a shift light. The toggle and red lamp will be for the ignition, starter, and fuel pump. IMG_4618.JPG

    You can build your floaters to be adjustable. If the housing is mounted on top the further away you get from the spring the lower the car will set so it should be easy to get it to set where you want even with the full spring pack. Then just take out springs to get the spring rate you want. I included a pic of how I make them, been making them like this since the mid 1970's, real simple and they work great.     Just a note on those ET slots. The washers for the lugnuts come as shank style for mag wheels, or conical like steel wheels use. Be sure to get the conical washers, and not the shank style! I've used them with shank style washers and had them work loose! Nearly lost a wheel on my car when it happened and it went from feeling nothing to almost falling off in a couple blocks! Switched to conical washers, and nuts, and it's been great for many years!

    When I first started reading this thread, the car I thought of is of the photo posted by swade41, the light brown/tan 4 door sedan I've seen run many times over the years. AND, it's a STREET CAR to boot! The very first job my younger brother got, straight out of college, was with the State of Washington in White Salmon, some 25 years ago. Now, he and his wife (a White Salmon girl), live in the big city of Port Angeles, Washington. I'll be watching this build.
