When I say staged, I mean the car was never really at the show, only registered and hidden prior to the event, then reported stolen.

I'd give $1000 if I could have just a few minutes in my shop with one of those god-damned thieves.

A keyed battery switch is a good deterent , they have a Fused lead with a small fuse to maintain radio stations or computer module if you have that .with the key off , if someone tries to start the car , it burns the fuse

Post the part, I went to GG on Sunday an would leave my car to check out the swap meet, I have a cut off in the trunk, but a keyed switch might be better

I have never pulled my key at a show, but maybe I should...

Not to be on the thieves side......but couldn't they just make a small jumper harness with all the basic connections to get the car running ? Quick connection creates it's own circuit and a remote starter to crank it. Then they wouldn't care if you had a cut off or a fuse pulled.

Just playing devil's advocate, but they have to be able to act quickly with little fuss.

I bought mine from Ron Francis 17 years ago , I checked his web page and couldn't find the one I have . But , Amazon has a butt load of them available , having the key in your pocket makes ya feel a bit safer while walking the rows at the shows or swaps

I lock my Doors, Windows up...they are clear...I don't trust like the old days...It does seem rather brazen this trifecta of thievery...

I hope those involved get thier rides back...that would make the gut sink to new lows...

All those deterrents are worth considering...I used to have a vintage Harley and I was always doing spot checks in between dances at the peeler palace...The Hotrod is no different, mind you the venues for entertainment have changed a little...:D

A few years ago at Pleasanton, a guy was asking people in the spectator parking lot if anyone had seen the thief that stole the tail gate off his truck while he was in the show.

It doesn't take a very big ring of old Worn out GM keys to find one that will start most older Chevys with the original switch in the dash. That's if the owner didn't leave the key in it as he was starting it to show people on a regular basis.
Mustang that year sitting with the hood open, That takes about 15 seconds for a pair of guys to start close the hood and drive away.
The Porsche, probably one of those aforementioned repo rigs. Wheel up, pick a piece of paper off the seat and act like you are comparing the info on the paper to the car and anyone walking by figures that the car got repoed. I used to see a young couple with a repo rig cruising the mall parking lot here on a regular basis but they went straight around to the cop shop when they picked one up and let them know they had it.

    Hey guys,
I have had my fair share of theft. Not because of lack of being prepared!
You don’t have a chance if these guys have a tow rig.
I currently have a Revelco unit in my daily driver.
I live in Piedmont, CA which is surrounded by Oakland.
The revelco unit is a 16 pin plug in unit that disables the car from being able to be hot wired or started.
Over 5 million units sold and not one car was stolen. Maybe if towed but not driven away. I only mention this company because their product works. 5 months after I put this unit in my Chevy Tahoe (Overlander) rig. Punched the ignition, and had the ignition in the ready position to start. But it wouldn’t start because I had the male side if the unit on my key chain. The female side stays in the car. I am planning on putting one of these units in my Woodie wagon project, once complete.
I don’t trust anyone anymore. I work way to hard to have some low life steal my shit. Consequences are way to low for these crimes.
No real deterrent of the law to prevent this from happening.

  16. It's Ravelco, by the way. Not Revelco.

  17. Unmarked tow trucks... who let those guys in? That has got to be a huge red flag unless they can be vetted at the gate, show ID and have a reason to be there, send an escort with them. Always good to have extra guys at the gates even if they wind up doing nothing.

Although it shouldn't surprise me it's still a sobering thought and a sad commentary to the world we live in. Not to mention you would have to have a lot of balls to pull something like that off in a huge crowd of people. We had sort of a buddy system at shows where we kept our eyes on one another's cars more so for people who couldn't seem to look without touching them.

To clarify, the tow trucks I saw were in the spectator lot which is controlled by Fairgrounds personal not good guys staff.

There is no such thing as a "fair share of theft" to the victim. Now I couldn't care less about thieves stealing my shit, they can have as much as I can pump out!

Sure, but all the people parking (their daily's and special interest cars) there are patronizing the Goodguys event. It's not as if anyone other than a Goodguys event customer is parking there.
If customer's are getting ripped off, Goodguy's management should be working with the site owner AND law enforcement to ensure their patrons are provided decent security. Especially if that's the only realistic place to park. If people were getting robbed in a private parking lot across the street from a major sporting event stadium, the league would certainly be getting involved.

It would be a good chance for the regional auto theft task force to stake out with plain clothes/unmarked officers. Don't red light the tow truck leaving-the driver will produce a phony tow order. The sting would follow the tow truck w/Hot Rod in tow to the theft rings garage. Then raid the place and arrest the entire ring.

We have problems with thefts of OT cars by pickups with a hoist rig. The back up to the vehicle and slide it under, lift and they are off. They can get a car in a minute or two.

Wow! looks to me like it would be easy to steal a vehicle if you connected with and
paid off a "willing" parking lot attendant.

  27. It don't matter where the cars are, the spectator's lot is easy-pickings too. I have driven tow trucks everywhere on errands, not so odd to see one anywhere at any time. I even used to take one home with me at night if I was on call. But agree that a sting could be arranged pretty easily. The hardest part is getting someone to pony up a car to use as bait.

Would that stop the previously mentioned tow trucks?

I don’t know for a fact that tow trucks are to blame, remember that there is a swap meet going on as well, and lots of buyers and sellers may be legitimately be on site doing business. Lots of cars for sale in the “car coral “
