Projects Help! 21 Stud 1935 Ford Flathead

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Nicholas Coe, Oct 21, 2019.

  1. I can't seem to figure out what the part that goes here is officially called. What size bolts do I need?

Flathead fans, What other parts should I add to this mock up engine for display. Any cool ideas?

Please post examples of your display engines!

You need a 35 ford to finish that mockup.
Now those two big holes at the bottom front of that engine needs two water pumps.

Not water pumps...they are in the heads...but water necks

Shouldn’t be hard to find out? You’ve never had to find a-bolt in the coffee can before. Find just one bolt and then go to the hardware store and say I need a few of these.

  7. If it,s only for display and you don,t have the original water necks/engine mount just use an old exhaust flange .

Thx Dudley. Yes I forgot the early 21 bolts had pumps in the heads. Sorry.

  9. I have the original water necks. I was wondering if somebody had access to a repair manual to tell me exactly what I need. I'm a young guy...aka...not much stuff in my coffee can to try. Thank you!

Here is tip that may come in handy. You will never find fine threads bolts stock in anything cast. The bolts are 3/8 NC stock.

  12. Thank you! I'll try that. Only question would be how long?

My '26 Dodge and '32 Plymouth would seem to prove you wrong. More recent iron seems all coarse.

Bolt size would 3/8"- 16, about one inch long would work.

As stated before, the lower radiator hoses go there and attaches to a water hose neck as well as the front motor mount. You should be able to put your finger to the back side of the hole and use a piece of wire or pencil to measure the depth of the threaded hole and add this measurement to the flange thickness including the gasket. Use some anti seize on the threads.

  24. Thanks! It was a fun but very expensive"mock up" assembly.

  25. Grab a tape measure. measure the thickness of the flange on the water neck. Add 1/8" for a gasket and about another 3/4" for good measure its a mockup/display motor so exact grip length is not important.
