I started building model cars around '55, and several were painted purple because it was a popular hot rod color, and my mom's favorite! I remember mixing blue and red Testors to get the "correct" shade. When I bought my '40 coupe in '65 I always knew it would someday be purple, and finally purple body parts are now being brought home from the body shop. Got a lot of work ahead but my purple '40 will finally be finished!

Seen a good number of purple cars around in the 50's too.
First color I painted my hotrod in 1959,was from two only part full cans of free paint left overs. I mixed them together an that turned out too be purple, didn't last long. The shine faded fast{ I think the two paints didn't like each other. I painted my rod Gloss Black next,it's been that now all along.

Purple has always been around on hot rods but it looks a shit ton like satin black in old car magazines as do blue, brown, green, red and a lot of other colors.

  11. Purple is rarely offered as a color choice by car manufacturers.
This is something for which I'm personally thankful. :p
Love maroon, wine, burgundy. Purple? Not so much.

  12. I had an AMT '40 ford model when I was little. It was inspired by a '40 coupe built by a prominent builder in the late '50s. It was and I quote, "Monster Purple" and came with the formula to mix the paint. I actually painted a car color for a kid I went to high school with in '70s using the formula from the model kit.

    Larry aka Blue One,
If the Vulcan's Vicky doesn't give you a total hard-on there is something wrong with you. I can't and won't imagine it in any other color. Blue is just purple before the red is added!

Purple is one of those colors that always sounds great on someone else’s car...

I have yet to see the new version of the Vulcans Vicky in person.
I have a body and Hemi to create my own version someday.

I like the idea of purple but think I would grow tired of it looking at it long term. Same thing for Candied paints. Kinda of boring that way. I never get tired of black.

Original Lions Dragstrip Museum 2017 opening day

    Hey N,

The Vulcans have been around since the beginning of the local So Cal dragstrip era. Their 1932 purple Vicky has been in plenty of magazine display articles. The purple paint stands out like no other. And...the name Joe Mailliard has always been prominent in the lettering. His speed shop was close to our house and Lions Dragstrip. He had a big following, that included a version of the original Sidewinder.

The ABOVE photo was taken in the original Lions Dragstrip Museum in 2017. It was displayed prominently in that late 50s-early 60s corner.

It is always nice when drag racing and those classic race cars are shown to the general public and drag racing fanatics. In the latest version in a new wing of the huge Price Transfer Automobilia Complex, showed a year by year development of drag racing as seen at Lions. (Early 50s, 60s and closing in 1972) The cars and displays are very intricate with some rare historic stuff, never seen by the general public. It is a museum for drag racing fans.

The color purple is a stand out paint on any hot rod or drag racing machine. This Vicky had admirers in its original state and the newly constructed version. It serves as a great example of how the color purple could be used on a drag racing hot rod.

NOTE: Currently, the newest version of the Lions Dragstrip Museum is closed for another addition and rebuild to the displays. The addition should be finished by Summer 2020.

I guess there’s something wrong with me :D
If I were to get my hands on that Vicky I’d paint it a different color immediately :D

Really though I think there’s something wrong with all of us, look what we do with our time and money and look where we like to hang out :D

Sometime just barely post Hamb era, a friends older brother ( who later became somewhat of a mentor to me) painted his '57 post 210 purple sun-gleam. Sans front bumper and chrome reverse, nose down. Snotty 283 & a 4 spd.One bad mofo....I was smitten!

My late wife was an artist, writer & member of the Red Hat Society. She picked this color out of a 2004 Chevrolet SSR brochure, called "Ultra Violet Metallic Pearl". Unfortunately, cancer took her before it was painted/finished in 2008. Hard to match (needed a couple of repairs), so it's now being re-painted black.

In case you are not familiar with the Red Hat Society and why they love purple..

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn’t go, and doesn’t suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we’ve no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I’m tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other people’s gardens
    And learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.

But maybe I ought to practise a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.
