Or if Holstein Ask me i just answer,
”Oh, no sir. It's twelve and a half inches. Regulation size. Now, it's been checked several times. You can check it if you like, sir”.

    Rear axle Sunday!

As i mentioned before i bought i 39 banjo, in need of some tender love and care.
So today i took the axle apart to see how it all looks. It Will most likely be a full rebuild, but the axle was cheap so still a good deal

After some calculation i came up with the conclusion that it had 4.44 gear ratio, 40 teeth crownwheel and 9 on the pinion.

Since im not building a tractor, im most likely to change gear ratio to 3.25 or maybe 3.54

The ”things” that came out of the rear axle reminds me of melted choclate or something that happens after chili con carne night

    All for now.
And as always, cheers Hot rodders!

Made this this little thing today! An old generator, cut down to hold a fan. As i mentioned before i cut the outer pulley of my double crankpulley to clear the front crossmember so that everything will fit, wich also means i cant use the stock 59a fan wich is supposed to run on the outer pulley..
Electrical fan is not an option, so this seems like a good way to do it.

I got the tip of a friend of me. Its a nice short setup wich will hopefully clear the radiator!
As you might see its not done yet, i will have to shorten the axle that runs through the generator and of course also mount the pulley and fan, perhaps paint would be a good idea to give it a better finish

Not sure if anybody still follows my build, but i figure it was time for an update since it was a while since last time.

Lots of work has been done. There Will be lots of pictures for you to look at.

I had to pie-cut, heat and bend my front wishbones to get the correct caster angle.
I also did some heating and bending on the spindles so that the cross-over steering shaft could clear the front crossmember and the wishbones

Cut of the f1 shock mounts and rewelded them to line the mounting holes on the shock mount with the two rivets on the side of the front crossmember, knocked the rivets out and put two bolts there instead.

I also changed to a crab style distributor cap as i prefer the look of it, and it is a bit easier to service and inspect if you Ask me.
Total rebuild of my 39 rear axle i bought, new gears, i went for 3.54 gears, all new bearings and so on. Cut the old spring behind axle mounts of and replaced them with some very neat bolt on spring hangers i bought from Millworks Hot rods somewhere in US. The rear shock mounts also bolts to the backing plates, i believe the shock mounts are 46-48 Ford but im not sure, they look and hopefully works well.

Mounted the 39 axle in the chassie so i could start thinking about cutting driveshaft and torque tube, something i had been kind of nervous about, but turned out to be easier than i thought.

This i how i did it. I started by cutting my 35/36 torque tube somewhere where the overall diameter is the same. Mounted the front part of it to the transmission and measured the distance from the cut i Made to the rear axle mounting flange. After cutting the other half i just put two angle irons on each side of the tube and welded it.

When it comes to the driveshaft, i actually used a broomstick to play around with before cutting the real shaft lifted the rear axle so that the pinion lined up with the transmission. The driveshaft is a 46 i believe, at least post 41 as it is a solid shaft, i used the splineadapter at the end.
Well once i figuered out the correct lenght of the broomstick i took the real shaft and cut it. And thats was basically it. New Grease retainer and driveshaft bearing with new bearing sleeve
I forgot to buy a new speedometer house, so i took the one i had on the original model a torque tube wich matches a 3.78 differential so my speedometer Will not be so reliable

Next thing to do is to make my rear upper shock mounts. And then build a exhaust system. After that i think its time to put the body back on

    Cheers hot rodders
    Axel.

    Rear shock mounts on!
Gonna be a whole different car driving it with flathead and all, but one thing i think im gonna appreciate the most is proper shocks all around. It didnt have any shocks before, not even the old original ”dog leg” type. It was really bumpy, and when going in greater speeds and hitting a bump in the road it felt like the whole car bounced sideways!

    Axel.

Looks like your boxing in the side rails of frame. What are the black mark outs for, body mount bolts access?

Thats true! The frame is boxed from rear crossmember to the crossmember in the middle.
And yes, the black marks is where i will have to cut so i can get access to body mount nuts and bolts! Did not think about that before i welded the boxing plates‍

I'd suggest using a hole saw, it might look a little more intentional at this point... and more like a hot rod technique to lighten things.
Just a thought but an awesome job....carry on
