"Surfers" Special All photos and captions from here: https://www.hotrod.com/articles/fro...-can-am-shelby-mickey-thompson-and-how-to-win/ More OT subjects at that link. “L-R Mike Sorokin is still cleaning something. The guy in the Reath tee shirt is “Big Jim” Dunn the father of Mike Dunn the NHRA TV event announcer. The young fellow in the “Rader Wheels” tee shirt is unknown to me, and that is Bob Skinner kneeling in the foreground cleaning something behind the left rear tire. Because some of the fuel lines are disconnected on the engine, I would guess that I’m working on some fuel system changes but not in the photo. Notice how clean Mike and Bob are… Bob’s deck shoes, etc. People did not know what to make of all of this cleanliness.” -TJ “Mike Sorokin is hamming it up as he receives the “Top Speed of the Event” trophy for the 1966 NHRA Winternationals. We ran something like 210+ mph for this award.” – TJ “My guess is that this is the big Bakersfield race. The Surfers in the foreground racing an unknown competitor with a nice looking car. Those tired looking little hay bales scattered around were the only thing between the cars racing on the track and the people on the sidelines. The “God of speed” (whomever she is?) always looked out for the drag racers! It looks like the exhaust pipes on the Surfers car have had a bit of brazing done where they attach to the cylinder head to them to keep them from falling off of the car.” -T “More of Mike and the Top Speed trophy presentation, probably the contingency payout confirmations with the STP folks.” -TJ Dave Giles shared this photo of a Tom Hanna skeleton shirt. “The tee shirt business was alive and well and the people with a few bucks would print up new tee shirts regularly to hype something or poke fun at someone. The “Cam wars,” which was orchestrated by our hero Isky, probably caused more tee shirts to be printed than by anyone else.” -TJ Mike Sorokin RIP messing with the dragster in the staging lanes at Pomona.

'29 Pierce-Arrow. Australia City Motor Services used these to shuttle dignitaries. An AACA member who owns one of the ex-CMS cars bought it from the man who bought it from CMS. With the car came the log books, which showed it had covered 400,000 miles. The 2nd owner subsequently put another 135,000 miles on it, including towing horse trailers on the highway.
