Here's an old postcard from the little town I grew up in. I'm trying to figure out approximately when this photo might have been taken, based on the vehicles in the photo. Thanks!

Looks like every single one has gas headlights, so I'd guess probably before 1916. Too bad you can't count stars on the flags, that would help too.

I didn't know they had that many automobiles in the state of South Dakota back then.

    That's probably all of them.

    I'm guessing circa 1915.

I'm guessing they were not all new cars when the picture was taken.

Have to agree, not a power pole in sight, not even a telephone line. Probably the entire county's inventory of automobiles in one spot.

I was thinking that too, a boner... they wouldn't all be new cars. But you'd think that at least a couple two or three of them would be newer models. And it looks like all of the cars there have gas headlights, so I'd guess before 1924.

The majority of the tires on these cars are white and the change over to black was around 1917 or so. Some people say tires changed to black in WW1or around that time.

At a minimum it is post Valentines Day in 1912 as evidenced by the number of stars on those flags. Pre-1912 the 2nd and 5th row were short a star and thus offset, here they are all the same length. NM and AZ were both added in the first 2 months of 1912.

Probably taken on a Sunday. People didn't get out and go back then on Sunday like they do now.

  27. It's interesting that in what is purported to be 1911, Polo, Il already had power poles. And in 1915, Emery SD still had plenty of horses as evidenced by the many piles of "roadside apples" (aka: horseshit) but no power poles.
    That's all I got. o_O

  30. Time for glasses !! Zoom in, and look higher ... it's not two Dixie cups and a string. It's two poles and a wire.

    Screenshot_20191022-091539_Chrome.jpg

Answer is : When were Dixie cups and a string NOT used ? :)
