Projects just dragged home this 30 sport coupe.

I just picked this 30 sport coupe today. I was told the frame was stock but when I got there I saw the frame had been modified and juice brake conversion had been done. looks like it was set up for a different engine but I'm not sure what. here's the car. came out of the orange county socal area if anyone knows the history. it's been sitting for a long while.

the inside of the entire car is coated with a really weird coating . not sure what it is. any info would be great

looks like a 35-40 center x memeber grafted in. whats the motor mounts look like?

 

just flat plate off the lower portion of the frame and about a 2 inch hole in it.

 

not really sure yet. I guess a v8 flathead now. lol. keep the paint. I dont think its original but I would like to find out .

 

Sure looks solid. SportsCoupes are cool. That interior coating could be the lightbrown freckle coating that was used in pickup beds and deliverysedan/van luggage area. Or a fire extinguisher exploded.

From your photos and descriptions, I’d venture it had a Flathead V8 and tranny installed. The 2” holes sound about right for the Ford ‘biscuit’ front mounts.

The corner of the dash/gas tank appears to be Zolotone paint, like @34 GAZ mentioned.
It was common in the ‘60s, especially as trunk paint finish in GM cars of the era.

thanks for the help with the paint. the entire inside is covered with it, even the dash. not sure how I'm gonna get it off. as far as the k member set goes, does it look like something I can use ? or should I cut it out

 

The concept of the crossmember is sound but the workmanship looks dubious. You may want to use it as a guide for another flathead V8 but I would probably try cleaning it up a bit first. Looks like it was hacked in.

 

I was thinking the same. I might grind all the weld down so it's just tacked in then re weld it up. I have a flathead from a 39 merc with the 39 trans. will it fit ?

 

Looks like the trans mount from a later 40's Ford. If you can find the right transmission rear bearing retainer (has the ears that bolt to your mount there) it should bolt right onto the 39 trans. Note you will need to switch the 39 style clutch shaft (uses a throwout arm attached to it on the side of the trans) to the later 40's style clutch shaft which uses a tang that fits into the linkage still hanging there on your frame.

 

That should walk right in. As Alchemy says you need to change the clutch shaft to the later one to accept the linkage that's already there.

 

man your guys are freaking awesome . it has a master cylinder mounted to the firewall . I'll post a pic later tonight and see if you guys can help me identify it .

 

Quarters and bottom of the cowl look good, they usually rot out first. The spare tire carrier looks home made to accommodate a different wheel. I like that lube sticker on the pillar. I have one that I took off my '46 Woodie and helped me trace the car from 1946 till 1964.

here's the brake baking plates if anyone can identify

 

48 Ford brakes on Model A spindles. If you want under floor brakes, I'd say to look for the brake and master cylinder pedal set from a 48 Ford. It should bolt into your frame's 48 X member (unless there is something that might be in the way, I can't see from the pics). Use an adapter plate that will allow a 68 Mustang dual master for drum brakes on the 48 Ford brake mount (adapts from the 3 bolt 48 mount to the 2 bolt 68 master). Available from many parts vendors.

 

washed it . running boards off. and dropped a flathead in it with a 3 speed. all the builds and av8's I see have the front motor mount on the top of the frame rail . this one has them on the bottom and the engine looks really low . it is not sitting on motor mounts so I will gain some height back but what do you guys think ? I'm worried that if I put the mounts on the top then the x member in the rear wont line up right with the tranny mounts .

 

and I got a rumble seat for it .

 

At the very least you could make the crank centerline match the hole in the front spring clamp. Just make sure the clutch release shaft matches up to the transmission. You could adjust to match.

some later flathead mercs had an odd motor mount... could this be set up for one of them...?

 

I will look into the motor mounts being different.

tonight I cut out the old mount plates in the front . I've always been obsessed with old paint, so I've been cleaning and waxing.

 

The paint is cleaning up nicely! I liked the MC on the firewall...That's hot rod stuff!

 

so the writing on the steering column says 29, but I noticed the column shaft had about 1/4 gap all the way around it when in the stock mounting brace under the dash. is there a difference in 29 to 30 ? also if the steering setup was stock why would my frame be cut and this setup be welded?
