Passed this scene going the opposite direction a week ago - thought that was a real guy under the hood - told my wife it was not unusual to see a Ford with the hood up

Spotted this today , its along Hwy 30 in Oregon, the guy just saved it from where it was sitting and rotting .
It is now parked in front of his roadside antique shop , where it's going to become a flower planter. 20191020_154957.jpeg 20191020_154942.jpeg 20191020_155019.jpeg 20191020_155031.jpeg

I guess a flower planter is better than seeing it hauled in for scrap.
Worse yet would be seeing it turned into a ...aaa... , damn I hate to even say this...aaa.."Rat Rod"
    Sorry.

So a friend of a friend of a friend has a GTO he bought in 1967. Drove it until 1978 and parked it in a barn until 1998, then moved it outside to a nearby field. We rescued it! My wife said no more cars until She gets new countertops ...so my son bought it.
This is the story dragging it out of the field. I post this for inspiration in case someone is thinking about dragging home a “sitting and rotting” Hot Rod. Since not really a Hamb Friendly car I won’t post anymore on the car after this.

It was unbelievable, the keys still in it, no broken glass, no one ever jumped on hood or trunk lid.

It took awhile to get her out of the mud. It was sunk to frame.

Once we got the car up out of the mud I got all excited, I thought the car laid a GTO egg....but it was the shifter. It must have been under the seat and when the floor rotted out it just fell to the ground.

Once we got her out of the mud our excitement was short lived. All 4 wheels were locked up as we expected.

We brought a generator and an angle grinder and had to cut the drums to allow wheels to spin.

After we got the front loose it started to rain so we decided to see if we could just drag the car with back brakes frozen. It worked, we dragged it all across the field and winched it up into the trailer.

From when we got to the car until it was loaded was about 5-6 hours and we had 4 people. But the feeling of rescuing the car and taking it home was a great feeling. I hope this provided a little inspiration for my fellow hammers!!

Yes, correct, this car qualifies by year but as a muscle car not so much, I have picked up a little animosity towards muscle cars on the hamb ...which really is Hot Rod forum and not a muscle car forum. I have a Hot Rod buddy that even refers to the Hot Rod timeline as “pre and post GTO”. I am really on the Hamb for traditional and traditional inspired Hot Rods. A build thread on the GTO would probably be best on a GTO forum.

Been sitting there since mid 60s. I’ve been trying to get my hands on it since the first time I saw it in 2001. The day finally came.

  27. It's a shame the Goat was put out to "pasture" and spent all that time outdoors. It was already a valuable and desirable car in 1998, especially with a Tri-power. I hope it gets the restoration it deserves.

Bleach, I totally agree. Pontiac Historical Services has verified the car is a dark blue with white top, tri power, 4 speed GTO. It will be on the road again! We are looking at it as a 10 year project since my son has a young family. He is disassembling it now and having the block, heads and tri power hot tanked and checked for cracks. Needless to say frame is shot. Most sheet metal is available either reproduction or used. We are already collecting parts for it. Hopefully we get good news from crack checks. We are dreaming about a new Art Morrison Chassis for it.

  29. Chief, I'd sure like to see how it all comes together. Do you have plans on posting the progress somewhere? I've got a soft spot for the 64's.

I have a soft spot for them too. I have my 64 tri power GTO I bought in high school in Feb 75. I will ask my son if he is going to do a build thread, if so probably on GTOforums.com. My other son did a build thread on that forum when he did a 64 Tempest Custom. I think he will be doing a hamb thread on the Tempest Custom this spring as he gets the Latham super charger fired up on it. Stay tuned for that thread if you like 64’s
