In the last week of September, the earliest part of my hot rod custom car/truck episode came to a close. The memories of my first ride in a custom truck when I was 7-8 years old was still strong in my memory. I was always talking to my friend, the expert mechanic at our neighborhood Mobil Gas Station, almost every day after school. Learning by listening was just something we all did back then. It was on the way to and from school and it was a welcome sight after school on a hot day. There were freezing Cokes from that weird machine.

We had seen the custom 1955 Ford chopped Tahitian Red truck parked in the workplace driveway many times. One day, he told me of a story that would involve something I would like. (This mechanic was a family friend)

I have been trying to find photos of this amazing custom truck from those early days in the Westside of Long Beach. It was the only custom truck in the whole area. Not only was it a truck, but it was chopped in a different way than most. Plus, it was the first real live custom truck we were able to see almost everyday at the gas station or in front of the owner’s shop down the main street.

When we rode our bicycles to the big baseball park nearby, we purposely made a detour to see the custom, Tahitian Red 1955 Ford pickup truck. It was like going to those car shows in downtown Long Beach or Los Angeles, except that it was right on our neighborhood street, three blocks away.

But, some sad news came my way via email. The owner of the truck had fallen and passed away at his home. So, ends the search for old photos of his truck and the history of custom cars in the Westside of Long Beach. His son told me that the accident happened fast. In his discussions about the custom truck, at this stage of illness, he had no idea or remembered any photos of that custom truck. The son was not into hot rods and customs. So, the family connection is closed for now, unless there is a hidden photo box tucked away in a closet somewhere. It has been known to happen.

Similar look on the chop top... It was an outstanding Ford truck, white tuck and roll upholstery, finished bed, chopped top, deep dish chrome wheels with smoothies, lowered, side pipes and the most friendly owner/builder in our whole neighborhood.

I could not get an accurate Tahitian red color in the drawings, so here is one of the best examples of the Tahitian Red paint from this time period, 50s-60s.

“This hammered 3-window, owned by 22-year-old Lloyd Bakan, of Eagle Rock, California, first appeared in Rod & Custom in November 1956. Blue, with bobbed rear fenders, and a four-carb DeSoto Hemi, it was capable of 103 mph in the quarter-mile. Eleven months later, painted Tahitian Red, with full rear fenders and cycle fronts, the '32 appeared on the cover of Hot Rod magazine, flanked by a pair of bathing beauties alongside a swimming pool.”

Owner a farmer bought it from a old timer a few years ago, he drove it there. It's a solid Two door sedan. Been sitting there since, he is trying to get it running, not a hot rodder. He is about five houses down the road from us, we buy freash eggs from him $2 a dozen, cool farmer !
