Deal, Millar, Mayabb, Sorchik, Trosley and many others donated art to a magazine I worked for. Alas, none of it ever got published and I felt like an ass! But all these guys were very understanding about it (whew!). Deal just laughed it off. We only "met" on the phone, but he came across as a great guy - I could just feel it, you know? We hit it off. I was surprised that he sounded so youthful, too - about 16! Had a great energy about him that I try to pass on... Scotty
I had a Volkswagon surfer bus model, that must have been based on his drawings. I also have a dune buggy toy with the same raked, balloon tired theme. Always loved that stuff.
I always loved the art of Dave Deal! I've been collecting CARtoons for awhile and scanning the images that I really like... There are definitely a lot of his among them! I've shared a few on the CARtoons thread here on the HAMB and created a Facebook page to share them... Here's a couple...
i remember when i was a kid waking up on christmas morning to find 3 boxes among my presents under the tree...they werent cars but they were cool models...
If you guys are interested in some of his pieces, after he passed he left me and my father with all of his work. I have decided to share it with everyone and will be giving part of the proceeds directly to the Deal family. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1600567 http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1600320
Dave did the Viking characters for ArmorAll and was offered stock in lieu of money and took a pass! Not to be out done, when I had the opportunity to get them as a client, I too passed as the product was presented as a windshield wiper preservative. Work with Dave on the Jackman account and he was a creative genius.
When ever I would find his work in Hotrod magazine I would gently take it out and put it into a folder. Now I can't find that folder. Thanks Dave for all the cool art.
