Don't think so El, I blew up the picture that is on the floor in front of car at car show. Tail lights are different and it seems to have a black vinyl-ish hard top. Beside paint is different.

Jason in regards to the red car with the black top behind the blue Midwest 62 here is a picture of it at Tri City. I remember the car but cannot remember too much about it little alone who owned it. Here it is versus Berkley Auto Electric 57. This car was owned and driven by Teddy Boschma and had an injected 427 named Go-Rilla (ran B/MSP, B/G and C/A-sure on the B classes but not 100% sure on C/A). Boschma 2.jpg Great running car that always put on a show.

The the brown one color kind of looked like a goldish green metal flake base color that might have been painted over. The green one is a vintage picture and the brownish one with the fade paint job was found about 8 years ago in New York or New Jersey and was posted here on the HAMB.

Los Angeles County Fairgrounds, Pomona, Ca. Another picture of the candy apple red '57 "Precious Vette" of Larry Mallicone. Saw it again last spring reportedly now being driven by Larry's grandson in the Super classes.

Chuck, do you have any more pictures or stories about the 57 that you raced?

Jason the K-Motion Corvette is Bob Kamp at Indy in 1970. The Jackie's Automotive 57 is Jackie Mize although I am not sure of the date. I know he ran at Indy in 68 but this was not that date.

Would a '53-'54 Corvette with a hopped-up* six have been competitive in a drag racing class in the early to mid '60s? ...or for dry lakes racing? If so, could you provide details and/or pix?

The hot set-up probably would have been a GMC six with a Wayne head but I'm wondering if anybody stuck with the Chevy to meet a class requirement.

Scotty I agree with the Pizza Man but also Apricot Brandy (originally called The Stinger) had a 292 6 bored to 301 that ran a 4 speed with a 4.88 to many event wins including NHRA 68 Spring Nationals, 68 Nationals, 69 Winternationals, 70 Summernationals (and I believe 71 Summernationals) plus a couple of Nascar Nationals (67 Summer Nationals and 68 Winternationals).

Pizza Man ran a bored 292 with a Turbo Hydro and had many event wins and records. His best year arguably was 67 when he won class at the Winternationals, Spring Nationals and US Nationals.

The '57 came into my possession in 1964 and I owned it for about nine years. For most of that time it was a track-only car. As far as pictures go, some fifty-five years after the fact, there are disappointingly few in existence. Photography has never been a part of my everyday world. The few that I have found have been dredged up from converted 35mm slides and faded brownie shots that were usually taken without me even being aware that a camera was present. A camera has never been a part of my tool collection.

Stories? We all have stories although I suspect that most of mine fit comfortably into the lower end of the drama scale. Some were notably forgettable such as the trip to the ER after I dropped a transmission on my eyebrow while in the process of changing a clutch. Others were more gratifying although few, if any, of them surpassed the feeling of accomplishment at surviving my first NHRA Stock Eliminator teardown with a car that I essentially put together from scratch. A few short months after that emotional high, Junior Stock was wiped off the agenda by NHRA and we had to start all over. The vast majority of the good times associated with the '57 consist of a series of personal challenges presented by stepping into the world of competitive motor sports equipped with little more than desire.

I know that this is a woefully inadequate response but I really appreciate the fact that you asked.

Thanks for your response Chuck. I always appreciate first hand information on how things really were during that time. Some of us weren’t around yet to experience it. My dad said the same thing when I asked him about pictures of his old cars. He never owned a camera during that time and said that he spent his money on car parts often from junkyards instead of a camera. The few car pictures that he has were mostly taken by people that he knew and given to him over the years.

It must have been a good feeling when your car was inspected and found to be legal. Especially when you were kind of figuring things out as you went.

This was posted by tommyd in the vintage shots from days gone by thread. I'm hoping someone knowledgeable about classes or has a rule book can tell me if the car is a '56 or a '57. Considering '56s had 265's and '57's had 283's.

RG, it's not hard to figure out if a list of the class P/W factors for the specific year is at hand. Unfortunately, I don't have a 1969, '70 or '71 book and the class breaks changed from year to year so I can't be sure. It's not much earlier than that because as late as 1968 Corvettes would have been in Stock Sports classes. I know that Marv Ripes' 1957 Corvette, 250 hp, w/PG ran in I/SA in '70 and '71. The P/W factor for that combination was (and still is) 11.31. The P/W factor for a '56 225 hp, w/PG was (and still is) 12.61 while the factor for a 210 hp, PG combination is still 13.54. The factor for a '57 220 hp, w/PG would have been 12.85.

Using those numbers and comparing them to the list of class breaks from a rule book would provide the answer to your question. Without much fear of being wrong, I'm estimating that the pictured car would have been either a 210 horsepower '56 or a 220 horsepower '57. An educated guess would have been a 210 horsepower, '56 w/PG.
