Hot Rods My 27 RPU loaded for a road trip

Got the RPU packed for a road trip in the morning. Heading to New Florence Mo for a car show which is about 3 hours away. Hitting the road at 7am and its only supposed to be 35 degrees! Which got me thinking. What temperatures do you take your open cars out in? I can't be the only one with a screw loose....

Nice little rig.What are you running for a power plant? Its getting late for open cars in your area.Hope it stays dry for you.With a good coat,and gloves,and cheap sun glasses I would say 35 is about the cut off point.Ive ridden Harleys at 20 degrees on the Highway,and it gets old quick.

Headed to rustoberfest ? I will be in boonville for carshow during the day and blackwater that night for cruise in. may see you on i70 . have fun , stay warm. Hand warmers might be a good ideal.

 

I take mine out in cold weather a lot and have a leather driving hat with goggles, leather jacket and have supple leather wrangling gloves. JW

 

at 35 degrees better keep your head down low or wind chill hitting your face can cause some true pain and blurred vision

 

I want to make one this winter!

 

@fastcar1953 Yep. Safe travels man!

 

Some safety glasses will help with the cold wind blurring your vision, and a ski mask of some sort to keep from getting windburned. Some layers and the heaviest coveralls you can find, with gloves to match.

 

I’ve seen @Malcolm and Jason I. Some pretty low temps moving down the road.

Personally I’m normally down to the high 20’s in the 46 but once I put all that insulation on the firewall it’s not as warm as it once was!

Long as there’s no ice or salt I’ll drive it

 

I just made a taller windshield as i was sick of the cold wind in my face, its only two and a bit taller than your's now but it makes a big difference. Also if you wear gloves make sure they are not slippery on the steering wheel. JW

 

Side curtains and a bit of duct tape

@manyolcars Yeah, couldn't find an original that I was willing to pay for. Made this one by skinning a couple old Jerry cans.

Nice to see people willing to brave the weather. I think I would have a little Buddy radiant heater screwed to the floor. Definitely going to add a heater to my build. Have a safe trip.

 

Be safe! I remember some cold mornings in my Dad’s T bucket. I didn’t know then that was a slice of heaven.

My parents are about 30 min down the road and are going to try to make it.

I may fly up for it next year.

I left for the Lonestar Roundup in my roadster a few years back in 23 degree weather. Full winter coat, couple layers of clothing, two pairs of socks, two pairs of gloves and my full-face helmet helped. It was still damn cold, though!

 

Malcolm is much braver than me. I think the coldest I've had the Roadster out was around 36 degrees. Multiple layers to include thermal shirt, bibs, hooded sweat-shirt, Carhartt hooded jacket, wool gloves, ski dickey and it was still cold!

 

32 deg looks like he’s on the road!

 

I drove my old coupe home from Beaver Springs PA a few years ago. 38 degrees and a misting rain. The coupe had no heat, defrost or windows. Put my winter coat on backwards so the collar of my coat would cover my mouth and nose for the 155 mile drive home.

 

You guys make me cold just reading about your travels in open hot rods in cold weather. Have fun and try to keep a little warm!!

 

For my last many builds I've gone this way. What I like about them is in an Open car if the seat is damp in the morning you can dry as well as warm them before you get in and head out for your morning cup of Coffee. Hay, every little bit helps.
