Anyone know where the vin stampings are on a 46 short door business coupe or long door coupe?

Look all along the top of the left frame rail from the front crossmember all the way back to the firewall.

VIN use did not start until 1954 - you are looking for factory production stamping

  6. There's always one, whenever this comes up. Yes, the federally mandated VIN system came along much later than 1936. However the OP said vin, not VIN. the stamped numbers are a vehicle identification number though not a VIN is a vin or probably more accurately a v.i.n. since we're being overly pedantic here

  8. Top of left hand frame rail and two places on top of left hand frame rail under the body that cannot be seen unless you lift the body. Same number appeared on transmission case but this is generally not used for registration since it was common to replace the transmission. See: http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/flathead_serialnumbers.htm

Be sure to look to the bottom of the page.

Does anyone have a good acronym to use for the vehicle serial number used for identification? Some people just don't like using VIN for the vehicle identification number although it makes sense to me.

Vehicle I.D. Number. ('Vidn') Naaah, sounds too yiddish.

  10. Vehicle Identification Number- VIN- what could be simpler?? With our without periods- it’s the same thing and a universally accepted acronym for the automotive industry- we don’t have to rethink the wheel here

All you will find stamped on the frame is the serial number of the engine/transmission combo as it came down the assembly line. Henry Ford didn't put any of the options/color/model info on a tag that early.
