I have a 8ba with a merc crank, sharp 60cc heads, Winfield SU1A cam, adjustable hollow lifters, .040 over coated 4 ring pistons. Stock valves rebuilt and polished, ported and relieved, and a 2 deuce super weiand intake (carbs separated over the ports). And Holley 94s. dual point conversion LOM distributor. And block hugger headers. Around what hp am I looking at? I was thinking around 160. But what do you guys think? I will post the cam specs when I get a chance. Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
HOLY CRAP! I didn’t think a natural aspirated flattie could make that power!!! Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
You're going to hurt any performance gains with that LOM. Really need a distributor with centrifugal advance.
Not going to happen unless under total wight around 800 pounds ( go kart -bike) then still might need a after market billet block & other custom parts & a tip of a can "Nitro" @ 800 pounds to run 9.00 sec = in 1/4 @ about 220 hp @ wheel @ 1,500 pds 407 hp to go 9.00
You need to do some research on the internet. Here is one place: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Bradley_(drag_racer) Bradley was a good friend of mine. Here is one of the modern ones that go fast. https://www.hotrodhotline.com/rick-schnell-and-worlds-quickest-flathead-dragster#.XZ92-i2ZNGM
195hp to 220hp?...Be careful with that much horse power. You don't want to scare that Hemi when it rolls up...
John Bradley A true Hot Rodder , thinking out side of box Like so many other pioneers of racing hot rods I know it can be done but not with typical 32-53 ford parts Naturally aspirated , stock Block Filled ok , , Johns set up , look what was done to it & part list . My statement is if you what to run 9 :00 with a Typical Ford Flatty Naturally aspirated with maybe little Nitro needs to be around 200hp @ 800 pounds total weight with driver . There has been Hot Rodder's using Nitro with gas since 50s , Nitro will mix with gas , I really have not looked up to see If it will mix with todays gas formula
"There has been Hot Rodder's using Nitro with gas since 50s" I was one of the first. It was quickly discovered it was not practical from cost and efficiency though. "Nitro will mix with gas" Not what is available for drag racing. (nitromethane, Ch3No2) You seem handy with internet formulas for performance so plug these numbers in for a 1/4 mile. Speed 121. Time 11.34. This was in 1953. 315 ci flathead on gas. Drove car to drags, Ran and drove home. Drove to work 5 days a week also. Car pictured in my avatar.
I think 160 is more in the realm of things. 175 is attainable on a great runner with 185-200 being in the outside; better intake more carbs; bigger valves(over 1.60 not as beneficial—1.75 too big) better ign—-3 5/16 x4seems to work best for power!
