A photo from a very old album, bought at an auction. Most of the pics were from WW1, though this one is a bit later.
This is Kathy Kohner. Kathy became famous as the real life "Gidget". Her father was a screen writer and Kathy told him all about the guys she met surfing at Malibu beach (where this photo was taken). He dad wrote the book, and it was purchased by a Hollywood studio and made into a movie in 1957. She started surfing at the age of 15, sometimes trading her peanut butter and radish sandwiches for chances to ride. She associated with such influential surfers as Miki Dora, Mickey Munoz, Dewey Weber and Tom Morey. Kathy is 78 years old this year. She was named No. 7 in Surfer Magazine's 25 Most Influential People in Surfing...
Kathy was the real deal, in the days of long boards and before wet suits. For many years, Kathy worked at "Dukes Restaurant" on the pier at Malibu, seating guests. 90% of whom did not have a clue who she was, despite the poster on the wall behind her.
Is there any information on the first shot, Rootie? It's a great shot and I'm wondering if this might be at a URC race? The second attached shot appears to be Bobby Unser being pushed back to the pits at Sacramento. And the third shot looks like Johnnie Tolan getting ready to go out at Indianapolis in 1956.
