Anybody do this? I have a unique set of tails (1947 Kaiser) I want to use on my A and the tail light pads do not seem to be available? If you have done it, what kind of rubber did you use and where did you get it? Thanks, andy
I used a closed cell, ca. 1/16" thick closed cell foam that I had left over from a heater box rebuild. My taillights had a compound curve on the mounting surface, which made it quite difficult to trace out a pattern. I bought the foam at a brick and mortar "Foam Store" and don't know more details about it.
When I made the gaskets for my home made taillights on my Harley-Davidson three wheeler I use sheet cork from NAPA, basically what the old valve cover gaskets were made of. HRP
I've got the exact same tail lights. I just made gaskets from a sheet of cork gasket material. You can get the gasket material in different thicknesses. If you want you could use black rubber or neoprene if you wanted I suppose too. It's pretty easy to do.
I put a small bead of black silicone near the edge of the housing, then let it set up for a day or two
Sheets of closed cell foam is available from hobby and craft stores in various colors and thicknesses. I've used plenty of it over the years for taillight and headlight bucket gaskets. Works very well.
I went to a local rubber house and bought some sheet neoprene, about 1/16". You can trace the pattern with a ballpoint pen and it shows up pretty well. Then take a pair of sharp surgical scissors and patiently cut it out. If you cut the outside edge of the line, it will leave a nice overhang so that the housing doesn't touch the paint.
I bought the same lights off eBay for my coupe, made up a template and used some 1/8” rubber from the hardware store.
