Can I use a 6v starter solenoid in a 12v car. My car was converted to 12v and I was wondering if I can use the old sol. Or would it burn up or something. Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
Be helpful to know what engine it's starting. Flathead in your avatar, can run 12 volts through it, no problem. Make sure you have a good ignition and don't crank on it all day. Have the brushes and bushings updated, you'll be good to go (or start then go).
A six volt solenoid can handle 12v as long as the engine starts easily...no updates needed to the starter. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Flatheads 101..... Rule#1 With primed carburetors.....a simple push of the button starts it. If you have to wind and wind and wind it. Something is wrong. Flatheads if they do one thing very well, that is they start right up. The starter does not get that much use. One of my big joys was turning the key and just barely touching that starter button. It was was instant BlumBlumBlumBlumBlumBlum.
The Flathead was famous for easy starting. My Dads friends , back when I was a kid would brag on how fast their Ford would start. They would try to hit the starter button as fast as possible and start the car. There was a story about one of their friends Ford would start by just pointing at the starter button! Seems he wired up a stater button on the floor board that he would activate with his foot when he pointed at the starter button! I guess he won! Bones
