I was cleaning up an old stock pan today and noticed it apparently clearanced, and not very gracefully, in what looks like the areas of the rods. Is some of this factory?

If it’s been stroked out. 383 strikers need extra clearance for the rods

  3. Those look more like hammer marks ?
Never seen a pan from the factory with marks like that.
But hey man,,,it must have worked ok for the guy before you.

Original SBC 400 pans had similar clearance (obviously better looking) at the inside of the pan rail for the rod bolts.

  5. Yes sir,,,but I don’t recall them looking like that.
Maybe someone needed a pan to go on a 400,,,and made their own?

Thanks guys. Maybe it was on a 400 stroke engine at some point, and clearanced with a hammer. Oddly, it was just an old dirty pan with the corporate blue paint.

I agree with gto66pont, Looks like some one tried to make a stoker pan, I have a Hamburger stoker pan that has been notched for a 4" stroke crank in a 400 block, had to grind the block for clearance also.
