    At least they're a consistent challenge, not like the constant changes on a dirt oval short track when the "horse-power" cars are running, & the track hasn't "glazed over" yet!

    Thank you Bugatti7, I've never seen street car tracks on a race course, that must have been horrible to run on.

  8. Doesn't look like any course at Monaco that I've ever seen! Most "Bugs" in those years had a passenger seat. Some Monoposto's were produced by Bugatti in the late 30's. Riding mechanics were required in the US, off and on in the 20's and 30's, halting for good in the 1938 Indy race.

    Two-seater bodies were variously mandatory or optional in the various International Formulas between the wars - the minimum cockpit width was usually 85cm (33.46 inches). The only true monoplace Bugatti GP car was the 1938 T59/50B3, although a few people did produce single-seater bodies for their cars. Bear in mind that Bugatti were producing customer cars, which the customer might wish to use in both GPs and sports car races - where two seats were of course mandatory.

    As for the Monaco picture, the Monaco Post Office used it as the background for the miniature sheet they issued earlier this year.

    Several European street circuits featured tram tracks! Slightly out of the parameters of this thread; this is Pat Garland's Delage in practice for the Circuit des Trois Villes in 1946. Not only tram tracks down the middle of a dual carriageway, but a surface change from tarmac to pavé and then back to tarmac. On race day, there was torrential rain throughout ...

    An interesting machine! An unblown 3 litre Delage Spéciale formerly owned by 'slot machine king' Louis Gérard. It was actually a Delahaye 135CS chassis, originally built for the cancelled 1936 Le Mans 24 Hours, and fitted with a short-stroke version of Arthur-Léon Michelat's 3.6 litre engine from the Delage D6-80, all originally clothed in a coupé body by Figoni & Falaschi. For 1938 the coupé body was removed and fitted to the Delahaye 135 of Mme Germaine Rouault, Gérard's chassis receiving that open sports body with cycle wings – again by Figoni & Falaschi. It is said that some of Gérard's business practices were rather dubious and according to legend he had paid Delage boss Walter Watney for the car with several large bags of 20-centime coins!

    After Gérard obtained a works Delage drive in 1939 the car went - in a straight swap for a Maserati 6CM - to The Hon Peter Aitken, who owned several racing cars, including one of the bimotore Alfa Romeos, which became the Alfa-Aitken once one of its engines had been removed. Aitken decided to retire from racing after the war and in turn sold it to Garland.

    I wonder were this car is today? There were three Type 59's at Pebble Beach this year, two completed the Tour, fun to see them drive by. Bob s-l1600.jpg

    Well, yes ... but whether it actually conformed to the then 750kg Formule Internationale is another matter. If, as is often suggested, it was overweight, then technically it wasn't a GP car. ;)

    There is of course no such argument over c/n 441352, the 1938 3-litre which is - in my eyes - the prettiest car Bugatti ever built.
