Hot Rods Mounting the condenser and dryer on my ‘66 F100

So I’m using the condenser and dryer from a ‘66 Mustang in my F100 and it’s a great fit.......upside down and reversed. Can I do this or does it have to be right side up? Dryer is directly attached to the condenser. The reason I’m doing this is to get the compressor on the passenger side and to keep the hose lengths as short as possible purely for aesthetics.

 

Would need to see some pics, but likely no.

 

I think no also. Could cut and rotate and re attach; check which end of the condenser [in or out] so you can move while detached..

 

I am thinking if you turn the condenser upside down you change the Freon from gas to liquid Tom

 

The dryer will be the only issue I see. If it is upside-down, then it may not function properly. Don't they all have sight glasses on the top? Must be a reason for that. As for the condenser, the refrigerant goes in, cools and exits. The flow pattern won't change the process.

The receiver- drier needs the be after the condenser in the system.

 

There is no sight glass on the dryer. And according to my Ford shop manual the dryer fittings when mounted are on the bottom.

 

Inline driers are available. The conventional drier design is supposed to stay vertical to function properly.

 

Don't. Found out the hard way years ago that the small outlet and large inlet are bottom and top, for a reason. The gas to liquid change happens top to bottom. Reversing causes high pressure that can and did blow one of my hoses apart when charging for the first time.

Found another condenser and all was well.

 

Also R-12 condensers do not work as well with R-22, they have a manifold on each end for a cross flow, R-12 uses top to bottom and it doesn't work as well. The drier must be installed like original.

 

R-22 ???

 

I hope he meant R134A.
