Projects Seagrave 531 V12 Special BuiLd Up in Brazil

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Drmalacarne, Sep 5, 2019.

  1. It took me a moment to figure out what that greaseable cross shaft with the trunnion on the end was all about. There's a lot of "monkey-motion" involved with those mechanical brakes. But you're right. They do look rather cool, in a sort of steam-punk way. :D

Please tell me all this is going to get painted eventually? The intake looks so good and the engine block looks so bad, you are going to paint, right?? Ralphie

I know you have your own vision of what the finished automobile will be, I thought I would provide a " teaser " for you in the form of a photograph of a 1927 Stutz Blackhawk, 2 passenger speedster. This is purely just to pay tribute to the time period and to the incredible build you are working on! Perfection cannot be rushed !

I too, had to study that brake system for a spell to figure it all out? I love looking at how those engineers “ got things done” back then. Most manufacturers, as the century progressed began to do things, kinda the same..... but early.... there were a lot of different ways to accomplish a job!
    Out standing project!

Those manifold castings are works of art. I can try to imagine the work of the man who made the patterns for them.

There were a lot of places for the old grease gun back then! And I see why you didn't machine fins on the drums.

I repaired this speedometer for a customer of ours, it would have been perfect for the build. 2021177-875ccee8789c62a4a1431a30c8dfa479.jpg

It was Part of a Grand Era and It's Going back...What a joy that it will be to See The Inspired Visitor completed...The Build is a great journey as well. You must have some Very Exotic Roads down there to stretch its legs out a bit...Any Vintage Race Tracks?...Board racing might have been a track staple back then... @Drmalacarne thanks for sharing this...

IIRC, Seagrave bought the rights to make the V-12s from Pierce Arrow. PA owners club members may be able to help you with your engine. JWL

The original Buick steering box was revised and we had to pull it way back to the rear because the size of the V12 engine.
    IMG_9822.JPG
And we put it slightly more inside the chassis and with a 3 degrees inward orientation to locate the steering wheel more centralized.

I have been looking for some photographs of my '48 Seagrave, but I couldn't find much. I did find a couple of photos I took during the restoration. On the top picture, you might be able to just make out the finned coils mounted on the top portion of the cowl. The second picture is of is a detail of one of the carburetors that might or might not be of interest.

One thing about an antique fire engine. I found it to be the ultimate social tool.

We started to make the wood frame for the body.
    IMG_0058.JPG
We made 2 ribs for the cowl section.
    IMG_0059.JPG
And 2 rails above the chassis.
    IMG_0060.JPG
The passenger seat will be 20cm after the pilot section.
    IMG_0061.JPG IMG_0062.JPG
Later we’ll make transversal reinforcements in the cowl.
