Hot Rods Qucktime for 390 Cad.....anyone???

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by DeadFast 33, Nov 8, 2017.

  1. Hey Rex, what were your thoughts about this bell housing? There's a few ridiculously cheap on eBay...might get on seven though I have the wilcap set up.

The ad says it fits a 365 and 390 Cadillac. Does anyone know if the 429 Cadillac is the same bellhousing pattern?

429 is not the same block.

This bell works up to 62

Is1yj, you mention a chrysler truck starter, is that a bolt up to the quicktime bell? And do you have a part # or model application? Thanks in advance, Lumpy.

Do keep in mind this bell is for a Ford T5 or TKO, not the GM bolt pattern.

The 90’s dodge truck starters are what was used in design. I don’t know part number, but a 318 starter should work for application

The most often referred to Dodge truck starter is a 1992 Dakota starter from a 318. The body of this starter is "mini" in size but it is not a gear-reduction starter like some of the aftermarket starters.

Thanks. But yes, I do know that a 429 Cadillac is not the same block as a 390 Cadillac.
Much like a 351W Ford is not the same block as a 302 Ford, yet those two Fords used the same bellhousing.

The down side to the dirt cheap Quick Time bellhousing is that it probably means that it's being discontinued.
I just checked and it's no longer available online via that link. I guess you guys bought them all!

There are millions of the Ford T5's out there. Well, there were, but now that I need one, they will all disappear.

Maybe I got the last one from Holley. I ordered mine Tuesday thanks to a tip on here and it shipped Wednesday. It's supposed to arrive today. I'm counting on this fitting my 331 although it only lists 365 and 390 engines. My two 331s are '55 models without the cast in bell, only available the one year.

Some additional information on small Mopar starters. There is an even smaller starter model used on 2005-2008 Dodge Rams with a 5.7 and a MANUAL transmission. This one apparently is a gear reduction design and is not offset like the Mopar or Nippondenso "mini" gear reduction starters. The 2005-2008 Ram starter's housing is directly in line with the starter drive axis making it smaller overall. The "Mini" starter is shown below compared to the 2005-2008 Ram starter.

I have read several post's about cad trans adapters and several people stated that the 390 cad crank isn't drilled for a pilot bushing..Mine had a steel plug in it and once I pulled it out the machined surface is now .520 deep ...works for me:cool:

Here is what I have found with the scatter shield. The holes in the block plate for the starter mount are only drilled to 5/16" and the starter bolt are 3/8" so these two holes need to be drilled. Also, the lower two bell housing mounting holes are drilled and tapped for 5/16", don't know why as the caddy block is drilled and tapped for 7/16" bolts. I am gonna just drill them out and mount it the way Cadillac intended. Photo1.jpg Photo2.jpg

I'm working on some starter issues now, I purchased a Power Master gear reduction starter but it doesn't fit as well as I like. Today I will try a factory Mopar starter. Will post my findings. :D

So after work today I installed a starter for a 92 Dodge Dakota with a 318. It still didn't sound great so I removed it and noticed two small raised edges on the bell that were protruding slightly past the opening of the block plate, I ground these down with a carbide burr to match the block plate. Cranks and sounds just fine now:D

One more note on this subject . the Wilcap flywheel is . 600 thick . the Cad crank flange is .500 thick . Most all Hi Po flywheel bolts I could find were 1 inch long or less. I found Crower flywheel bolts that are 1 .125 long , part # 78446A-6

Interesting note on this , Trans Dapt actually had a listing for a 390 Cad to Ford input Bushing as recently as the the late 90s ..Part # 5010 . Called Trans Dapt and as expected it was obsolete. I ordered an Advance adapters AMC to Ford trans adapter bushing , It is 1.8 od and I will turn it down to 1.625 od.

Also just picked up some Ford 5.0 10.5 clutch parts for fit up. If you guys look at your QT bells you will notice it is drilled for a clutch cable , which is probably what I will use when I install it in my 55 PU.
