I was in the Army from 1969 to 1971. I have no idea how infantrymen wound up in Alaska but that’s where everyone I trained with went. Here’s a picture of my current car.

 

USN '67 - '71 Went in with a '62 Valiant with the big slant 6, pulled that and put in a 273 based on a Hot Rod magazine article (back when they told you how to do things, traded it for a '66 Comet Caliente with a 289/ 4 sp. Learned to speed shift after I put a 4 bbl on it and the return spring popped off while flat on the floor. Ended up in a helo squadron HC-2 and spent the last with them training, then 6 months on the FDR carrier keeping the helo available. Not much driving that year.

I want to thank all of you that aren’t vets for all the good words that you say about veterans. There are a lot of patriotic people here on the HAMB. This is a fantastic group of people.

Ok … 26 July, 1967 … Aboard the USS Dennis J. Buckley (DD 808), at Mare Island finishing up a yard overhaul. I'm a smooth arm 2nd class BT, kiddie cruiser. Due to get out 1 November, day before I turn 21 … possibly because of my short timer attitude, I get orders to report the next day to the only guided missile seaplane tender in the world to finish my last 3 months. This thing is a relic that for some unknown reason was still in commission.
So, I load up & head to Port Hueneme … pull up to the "ship" in the '57 Dodge hardtop that's 2'' off the ground in front, with the gas filler dump caps knocked off back up the road a ways. I'm wearing dirty Levis, a B&M hydro T shirt stained with NSFO, & barefooted, with about 6'' long hair - regs tended to be a little loose in the yards … I park in the XO's parking place … grab my orders, & walk up the gangplank to report in. OOD - some lifer - lost it - says "You a fucking reserve ?'' He looks at my orders & can't believe I'm an E-5 … I get restricted for 2 weeks before I even get on board. Luckily, the engineering officer is a "mustang" and we hit it off quickly … got off restriction in 3 days. Best thing to come of this ordeal was the hobby shop at the SeaBee base there. Best memories of my navy hitch.

 

US Navy 87-91 out of Charleston SC, this was back when there was still a full on Navy Base in Charleston.
I did a Med cruise on a WWII era Destroyer Tender (AD-18) and off the coast of Libya on a Mine Sweeper (MSO-490)... the worst of both worlds in the Navy...lol
I had a "not HAMB friendly" G-body with a built small block, set of gears, etc... parts were plentiful and cheap for that car back then... I couldn't afford a hot rod on my E3-E4 pay. The base did have a well stocked tool locker you could borrow from and a multiple bay garage set up you could use for free. So I spent a lot of time there when we were in port.

May 1970 on leave. Twenty year old Navy Corpsman. My car payment was more than I made in a month. Sorry for the OT car, if it gets deleted I understand.

 

Gettin' a ass chew in boot camp.

 

I was in the National Gaurd for 6 years....don't think of myself as a Vet compared to so many who went into harms way, some several times. Many GR8 service personel who were & are car guys, and i just want to say: God bless you all and THANKS for your service !!!!!

 

Usmc 66-70 2 tours in nam 67-68-69 had a 63 Chevy impala ss at home waiting.

Was in the Air Force 1970-74, Security Police Patrol dog handler. At the time had a 1940 ford coupe. Exterminator

 

Heading back to Camp Pendleton after being home for 30 days after my tour in Vietnam August 1967.

 

I was stationed in Fort Campbell Kentucky in 1966. I bought a 59 MGA for 150 dollars .Before I left for Vietnam I drove home to New Jersey. When I got back home I put a small block Chevy in it. Kept my mind off things. When a left Vietnam a sergeant asked me to re-up. He said your airborne we will give you 1500 and will teach you how to jump back in,I never forgot that.
