Technical Stromberg carbs

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by wood remover, Sep 16, 2019.

  1. Any way to tell if a carb has been set up to run alcohol sitting on a table for sale ??
Bought an edelbock v8 60 intake with a pair of 81's , never thought much about it at the time . Has no choke plates and got me to thinking !!! 20190908_123314.jpg 20190908_123420.jpg

Depends on who modified the carbs, and how well they understood them.

For a simple mod, block the power valve, wind out the idle screw and double the jet size.

If they used the old Edelbrock kit, the needle & seat was enlarged to 0.125", idle pickup tubes enlarged to 0.055", main jets stepped up to around 0.082", emulsion tubes to 0.135" and power valves are to #69 drill.

I did a heap of work on the Aussie BXOV-1 Strombergs. In short, to run E85 or alky on an Aussie Holden inline 6:
    a) float system is unlikely to be effected much by a change to E85, though will need S-jet needle and seat assemblies for alky.
    b) idle tube should be drilled out to 0.031” diameter for E85 (or swapped to one of the larger Aussie idle tubes) and to 0.047” (or slightly larger) when changing to methanol.
    c) the standard 0.051” main metering jet is increased to 0.061” for E85 or 0.087” for alky.
    d) accelerator pump washer needs to be carefully selected to be compatible with oxygenates (one Aussie overhaul kit supplies an acceptable washer, the other does not).
    e) Power bypass jets are increased to #60 drill for E85, or #54 for alky.

    Cheers,

Nice tub! I recall drilling out those Strombergs when 15. (I was the 'carb man' in a local racing team) Guys "raised me from a pup".

  8. Look down the throat of the carburetor top / air horn. If the emulsion tube are large compared to stock size, It was probably converted for alcohol
