The Hamb is probally THE greatest place in cyberspace for 'real world' car guys ('n gals) as we all know.

But alot of hot rodders I talk to still don't know about this place. Real guys who've lived the life with cars and collections that would blow the average joe out of the water. Shit, most guys I know wouldn't be able to turn on a computer, let alone go through jalopyjournal to find it. Which sucks, but is sorta a good thing at the same time too i guess-

But reading Ryans articles on jj.com this morning sipping my kwoffeee- I realized, this would make the greatest damn printed magazine ever. The stories and material are excellent, Ryan's got that graffic design background, uses colors, pics and style like une artiste extraordinaire. It would sell like crazy. Something similar to Roadapple's little limited edition mag... It would be the greatest thing since slice bread. We've got enough Hambers on here that are into printing, photography, art etc... that there would never be a shortage of material or help. Maybe even get some sponsors to cover the costs of the first issue.

So whatchu guys think? I'm down! I'll order 50 copies right now, and help in anyway i can!

I work for a magazine printer, I'm sure we could do a good bid on the printing of it.

I don't think you'd need sponsors, pretty sure we would buy the first issue out of print before it was printed :)

I think a really great mag would be a large editorial with Ryan preaching the gospel, one or two guest editorials, a couple of feature cars and the rest of the mag all tech stripped from the HAMB. Dat'd be sum kool chit mang.

  11. Was there ever a PDF of it made? Or scans that could be posted of a few pages? I think that would be interesting to see. Kriminy, 9 years ago...

as long as the content is coming from the readers /posters on this board like a lot of the front page is thats cool.

its when you have a "staff" that magazines take a dive as most of the time....the staff is shitty and you get articles that are consistantly bad.

i like it the way it is now, electronically, and would pay for the front page JJ access...

screw paper magazines. online is more interactive.

Where do I send subscription money? Need new, better, material than Custom Rodder or OSR. Already canceled Street Rodder.

Sadly, I only have about half of that print issue... It's not a magazine I am very proud of. I was younger... and dumber... and hadn't found myself yet.

I think we printed 50 of them. I know one sold on eBay about a year or so ago... I have no idea where the others are.

Off the top of my head, it featured:
    - Rev. Horton Heat interview and car feature
    - quick change tech article
    - how not to chop a shoebox ford article (all about how I fucked up my first car)
    - Ed Roth Interview
    - George Barris Interview
    - Von Dutch Pictorial
    - Coverage of the 1996 NSRA NATS and my exit of the show

it would be a great idea, i know a few older guys with a wealth of knowledge who cringe at the idea of turning on a computer. i tell them about the hamb all the time but they wont jump on, so a printed version would be a great idea. im sure there wouldnt be a problem to make a minumum amount of subcriptions, shit im sure there would be a waiting list.

They are no different than this old fart. They will just have to learn to use a computer. I have helped many people navigate the net. I had to learn it and so can anyone else. All of the sites and information on the internet make my life a lot easier. I think one of the problems with teaching someone to use a computer is that lots of teachers try to give the student to much information. You do not have to know how a transmission works to be able to drive a car.

Can you post questions to a print magazine and get knowledgable responses within hours? Nope

Can you post pics of your own car in a print magazine? Nope, -except for JimA ;)

Can you send messages to other readers of a print magazine? Nope

    Just my 2 cents.

A printed magazine with the amazing tech of the HAMB would be great and I'd suscribe for sure but nothing can hold a candle to the HAMB.:D

You can read all the Tech articles you want to and never learn a damn thing...Get yer ass in a bind working on your car, grease up your keyboard with the problem, and get more information than you can ever pack into a magazine!! I love the HAMB, and I'd subscribe to the magazine, but I also love everything that's already going on here, so I hope nothing changes if this goes through.

What about that whole "are editorials are not for sale" bit?

Not to mention it would turn into a OSR debacle. Part of what's nice about the HAMB is it's not "public" persay. Once it's on news stands for the masses it will lose some of it's charm, and there's people out there lurking that forget to post an intro before asking a question...the intro nazis would have to work O/T!

  28. I work for a printing company as well (Cadmus Communications). I am a file certification specialist at the composition site. We mostly deal with medical journals, but I'm sure we could do a HAMB mag.

That's not necessarily true. Its when the bottomline and profitability comes into play that the watering down can take effect. When the buck becomes the driving factor. If the HAMB pooled together to drive out issues, that takes that factor out of the equation. Like the old monthly's and such - they had a few advertisers to help pay for printing, but also to help the get the word out about the advertisers. But content was kept key, because it was driven by the contributors. As caffeine said - not staff, but contributors. I used to be involved with the small music "zines" when I was younger and dumber. And that's the way those worked, and it stayed good, as long as you have a core of devotees to keep it running and don't rely on one person to shoulder the responsibility . Jsut my thought
