Rootie, it's very possible that your previous photo of Caracciola pulling out was taken on the day that he crashed. I had to go look it up but it turns out that his crash did take place on a qualifying day during Practice. This was on Tuesday with the race to be run on Thursday. The Grancor car (of Danny Kladis) was also one of a handful still trying to qualify that day so it might make sense that the tail of that car shows in the photo as well. I can't remember the details but someone complained about Rudy's cloth helmet so AAA said he would have to wear a "modern" helmet. Someone produced an American military tanker helmet so Carraciola put it on for what turned out to be his final run.

I really love the older stuff. Years ago at the Portland swap meet, on a table full of books, I found the Jimmy Murphy book, for $2.00, and minutes later on the same table, I found the cool little Marlboro book for $1.00, it was pretty cool to see that the little Marlboro book included Jimmy Murphy. If you all ever see one of these little books, grab it quick, the history and information is wonderful to read. Cool history of the first 75 years of the brickyard classic.

It really says that there will be a speed limit in 40 miles. But I don’t think the judge would see it that way.

  30. What genius came up with this? Hanging by the neck is a very old and proven form of execution. A bad idea that enough company people liked enough to build and test. Crazy!
