65pacecar...good question since people seem to go nuts for "celebrity" cars. I've
wondered the same about the Corvette used in the tv show "Stingray" starring
Nick Mancuso.

 

Betty Skelton drives a Chevrolet Corvette convertible ond aytona Beach. While Skelton was working with Chevrolet, she set numerous records with Corvettes and helped launch “Corvette News.”

 

Guys I have been putting together a history of solid axle Corvettes in drag racing (concentrating more heavily on the 60s) and have spent a decent amount of time trying to track down the history of the the Corvettes (mainly solid axle models) that ran in modified production and then modified eliminator starting in 1970. I want to include a mention at the very least of the great modified era but if I had to do so now it would border on pitiful. I have binders full of information on the 60s and virtually nothing to speak of on the modified eliminator era. There are quite a few pictures of old Vettes that ran during the era but I have not stumbled on any information that would help tell the story.

Are any of you aware of any print media or even on line articles that go into any detail of some of the Corvettes be it the cars/drivers/events etc?

this car was held onto in the parents garage and then the sisters garage after his death, the parents allowed rosen to complete the task of setting ahra record which was done, 13 years ago the sister and husband sold this car to a boy whom had grown up near and watched Snyder with the car, he always know where the car was from 1968 no one else did. this car debut was at malba car show in whitestone ny 12 years ago and yesterday it returned the car looks exactly as it did in that photo above at national speedway. I believe there is 174 miles on it and all the window marks on it the day it race and set the record is intact. the pictures if anyone is interested is malba car shows, then I think there is a link for different years etc. it is truly a piece of history

I have almost got my 61 ready for the strip. I bought this back in 1971 when I was in the Navy. I raced a 67 chevy ll in high school. A friend wrecked it on a test run. I found the vette in a junk yard. Was not wrecked but in bad shape. I tore the vette apart and was building it into a modified prodction car. Before I got it finished I bought a gasser Baracuda and raced h/g till they killed the class. I quit racing and the vette has been waiting all this time to get finished.

I got the body work done and painted but never got the roll cage made
Or finished the rear suspension. I did have a 57 Pontiac rearend in it with a spool. After 3 years working on it I got out of the navy and took it home. That is as far as I got with it.

Stephen I really like your car and your spirit for continuing your vision for the car. Feel free to fill us in on the details of the build (drivetrain etc). Are you keeping the Pontiac rear?

I have been lucky that I have a friend that I work for part time and he offered me his nice shop to work in. That is one of the reasons I have waited so long to finish it. I just didn't have a place to work on it. The vette has set in my old dirt floor shed all these years. Now if you want to know how lucky I am this picture of my shed was taken 2 months ago. The vette would have been crushed. I have taken lot of pictures of the build. I have been putting in 10 and 12 hour days and a lot of 7 days a week, trying to get it running this year. Not very many days off. I have done everything myself except for the new paint job and glassing in the wheel tubs. Didn't have a place to to paint it. I stripped all the old paint off and sent it to the paint shop. I will post more pictures and details of the build.

 

Cut the rear tubs out and setting up the roll cage and tacking it in.

After I got the roll cage tacked in
I took it apart and took the body off the frame and put the frame on a rotisserie. The body went on a dolly.

 

I mounted the front end on an engine stand and took it apart and had it blasted and rebuilt it. I put aerospace disk brakes on it.
