1960 BAKERSFIELD SMOKERS MARCH MEET #2 TOMMY IVO WHEELIE IN THE TWIN

    upload_2019-9-4_3-30-10.png TOMMY IVO BUICK CONNECTION?
    Hello,

In watching old Tommy Ivo films that I took a long time ago, I came across the Buick connection in his race group. From the time we saw him with his single injected Buick FED at Lions in 1958-59, the red and white two toned Buick hardtop was the prominent push car for the single, FED race cars.

Yes, Tommy Ivo was one of the earliest racers to make the Buick motor popular in drag racing and hot rodding. His first Buick powered roadster was the T Bucket we all came to know and the first FED was the injected Buick in 1957-58.

In 1959, a 671 Buick motor was used for a short period of time, itching for that extra horsepower. But, was soon replaced by the famous side by side twin Buick FED. The same red and white Buick sedan was still the primary push vehicle for the newly created injected twin Buick FED, or was it?

One week it was the 671 supercharged Buick FED, the next week, it was the twin Buick with a newish car doing the push car duty. First it was the twin at Riverside in late 1959, then in 1960, it was back to Lions Dragstrip.

1960…Did the Buick connection end with a "newish" 1957 Cadillac?

We all wonder if this was a “gift” from local sponsorships for a well-deserved drag racer and/OR a great publicity stunt. The photo below is their first road trip across the USA.

With Don Prudhomme driving the Cadillac (studio rules) and being the crew chief, they toured the USA…in the 1957 Cadillac and the Buick twin.

Tip Angel and Mike Grimm AA/D out of Vancouver, Wa circa 1962. One of my all time favorite Gas Dragsters. Fuller Chassis, Wayne Ewing body, silver blue, Pontiac power, and a fierce competitor in the Northwest, 8.70 @ 171. Tip handled the engine and Mike handled the throttle. Sorry about the bad crop job on a great photo. 124.JPG

    That was a great era^^^
It was a time when a couple of guys, or even a guy by himself, could field a car and stand a chance of winning. Different ideas, a variety of engines, innovation, slipping the clutch, tugging the brake handle could make or break a race.
I was the wide eyed 17 year old kid at US30 when Dick LaHaie said “Come here kid, help me pack the chute.” That was 1966, LaHaie had towed in by himself with his fuel dragster on a two axle open trailer, picking up help in the pits as needed. Those Wednesday night events were the best, one week it would be Fuel Dragsters, maybe Gas Coupes the next, then Funny Cars, or Fuel Altereds in booked in shows. Yeah, they were paid appearance money but they still went for each other’s throats. Ira Litchey and Ben Crist ran the Gold Agency and always had great cars booked. It was the Golden Age of drag racing.

  17. Yes, 50 years will do that to a person.
I saw the photo. I have it in the album on my profile page. The NHRA tech guys were checking the cu in. 65 Winternationals.

I was thinking how great that era was also, that picture is a great example of that time period. Around here, and most places, the Dragsters and Comp Cars usually at least two owners names, they were working guys who had passion for the sport. My Avatar had Willford, Strode & Mead on the cowl, in the 80's. Thanks for your remembrance of Dick LaHaie, he was one of the greats.

Here are some shots of Ted Gotelli's car courtesy of my mate Pete Jensen who collated them. These are of the early car driven by Danny Milani. Next up I will post some shot of the beautiful Pete Ogden built car in which Denny lost his life.
