Could anyone tell me the difference between a early set of model A cowl lights and the later ? And was there a difference in the two bodies ? I want to get a pair to fit my pick up that I think is a 1929 . Not to worried about getting the right year just a good fit . I am in the uk but wonder if anyone has some that they might sell ?
If the pick up in question is the one in your avater you have a 30 31 cab and need the 30 31 cowl lights. The 28 29 don't fit. The 30 31's have a lip that goes over the cowl band. 28 29's dont.
My 31 and my Grammar school classmate Bill with my Dog Fuji , is the best pic I have showing the 30-31 Cowl Band with Lights
The 30-31 cowl lights fit over the cowl band. That band strip is either steel or stainless, and required for the cowl lights to fit correctly. The cowl sides won't have the proper rib for the cowl light to fit without the band.
This is my 31? Victoria. Left side has stainless / shiny right side I'm not so sure if te chrome has deteriorated or it wasn't chrome . Both are obviously damaged but should show what the guys are saying.
If you scroll down the page there are good photos of the difference between the 28/29 and the 30/31 arms. https://www.mikes-afordable.com/category/1048.html
Here is a set on EBAY. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1930-1931-...968977?hash=item2621fcbd91:g:M9AAAOSw3QldLUeU
The Band strip might be a problem . It looks like a big thing for postage , Has anyone used any sort of lights and fixed them in the existing holes ? I liked the idea of yellow lenses ablaze on my night trips to the pub
1932 Fords cowl lights have a flat mounting surface, but none of the cowl lights I am aware of have a yellow lens, they are eventually park lights. I suppose you could use a amber bulb. This is my old mordor with cowl lights. HRP
they look fantastic Not sure if I should hunt for a band to fit these or try the 32 . Has anyone seen these https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1932-For...705667?hash=item212fca4443:g:dHIAAMXQAF5RgIpB
Were Briggs and Murray bodies the same? I've seen 28/29 cars with cowl bands and others without. Wondered if it was body mfr difference. Or body style difference. ????
Please...buy a cowl band. It finishes off the body lines whether you have cowl lamps or not. They are available in plain steel as well as stainless. Your pick up would have had the plain steel one on it.
Close up photo of the cowl on truck . With my long suffering wife and our dogs . Do these holes look standard ?
Your truck looks like it usta be a fordor. And no, those holes are way too big. You might need to reduce the hole size for any type of cowl light you can find. I do think a 32 light would be a good alternative if you don't want to use a cowl band.
The stock Model A had a wood block that fit between the cowl sheet metal and that metal brace you can see in this photo. Designed to keep the outside metal from getting pulled in when the cowl light bracket is tightened. Bob
You could make them, but for $8.75 plus postage Snyder's will sell you two, part number is A-13318 Bob
Yes, all 1930-31 A's had a cowl band, some 1929 Fordors and the '29 Cabriolet had a band as well. Bob
Cowl lights also were the same shape as headlights.. 28/29 came more to a point like the headlights....
Thanks, for me it is making a note of the simple fact that they have to be there. I can do Chevy AD trucks in my sleep but the Model A is a whole new ball game for me.
As noted above, stock the trucks had a painted metal cowl band, I ended up getting a polished Stainless one for my truck and it really sets it off. Since you have over-sized holes in your cowl, you can do whatever you want. I would probably make a garnish plate to cover the big hole and add whatever lights you can get your hands on.
