what’s going on guys, out of curiosity i had a question about final drive/ rear axle gear ratios. i have a 327 small block (originally 250 horsepower) now closer to 350/375 horsepower. in my rear end right now i have 2.73 gears (open diff) and can’t get that one tire to spin for shit. it’s a 225/60/15 tire so it has a bit of meat but still, i thought i’d be able to get it to let loose. i bought a kit that comes with 3.55 gears and a posi that i will be putting in sooner or later. do you guys think that a posi and 3.55 will help or will i still have trouble?

The gear ratio will probably help, but the posi will hurt.

There are a lot of other variables, you know....we don't even know if you have a manual or automatic transmission, what kind of tires you have, what kind of car it is (heavy, light, wagon, T bucket, ????)

I think you are off on your horsepower estimate.
My OT '72 Formula 350 Firebird is rated @ 180 HP and has a 2:73 posi differential, and 245/60 tires.
It will smoke the tires from a dead stop until it shifts to second gear.
Really there is no good reason other than to show off to smoke your tires.
I am not so well off that I want to ruin a rear set of tires any way.

Put a motor in it that will break the tires loose at 60 mph ,then you'll be able to do all the burnouts you want ....

There must be something wrong with your motor. It should light up that tire. Have an old guy show you how it is done!

I find it hard to believe that folks don't genuinely enjoy a good, smoky burnout now and again.

  19. I had a 3.08 gear in this 4000 pound beast. I did not have my foot on the brakes and was running 235/70/R15 Coopers.

Your problem is the powerglide. Get a turbo 350 or aod

stand on both pedals, or get a brake line lock for the fronts only

Not quite! My old jeep had 5.38 gears, it wouldn't chirp the tires unless I dumped the clutch at full throttle, a blistering 3400 RPM. haha! Fun spinning around on dirt though!!

what is the difference that will help with doing burnouts? i understand turbo 350’s have 3 gears instead of 2 but why specifically will it help with burnouts?

  27. I have a 65 Valiant that had a stock 318 and 2.72:1 gears and it had no problem...maybe it’s a Chevy thing.
