Hey Desoto specialists, I have a few questions about my block. There is a passage that is machined into my block that I am not sure what it is for? The hole is at the rear of the left deck surface below where the distributor sets. It is a cast passage with a rib that travels down the rear area behind the bell housing. The passage has a hole drilled all the way down into the pan area. Looking at the pics,,,,my finger points to where it enters behind the deck,,,my other finger is pointing to where it comes out inside the pan area. Is this some sort of vent system,,,like a passage for a road tube vent? Also,,,I have the check ball that is inside the oil passage under the rear main cap. It seems to be a check ball to keep the oil from draining out of the filter when not running,,,since the filter was angled upwards from the factory? Am I correct on my assumption?
Oh yeah, This is my Daddy,,,,I had the pleasure of seeing him this morning at the Waffle House. He is 90 years old and is why I am who I am today. Gave me his old Motors manuals not long ago. He knew that I am the only one that cares about this stuff. I am his 7th son,,,there were 8 in my family,,, I have one sister. There is nothing that I could not see him fix. A Rock of stability! Tommy
The hole you're pointing too is the dipstick hole, it should have a shout tube (about an inch) in it for the stick to sit in.
Well I will be dad gum,,,,I never suspected that! I was thinking the other day about where the dipstick might be. l saw where the top was larger than the hole at the bottom . Tommy
