How do I get the SB mounts to work? I am having trouble with it I'm going to run electric fans in place of the original one to get more room. any suggestions will the SB brackets work in the original locations or do I need to move them around and drill new holes? this is a bottom dollar swap.

I also have questions about steering columns that will work I have a 75 Winnebago that I pulled everything out of and I was wondering if anyone knew if the steering column would work and what else may work on the 66 c10

if you can find the 68-72 big block mount setup, that's the way to go. It moves the engine forward of where the small block was mounted in the 66 truck, but not as far forward as they were mounted in the 68 trucks. If you use the stock 66 mounts, you'll have valve cover to firewall issues, among other things. Also remove the bellhousing crossmember if it's still there, and get a 65-72 rear transmission crossmember from a truck with an automatic trans.

you will probably have to trim the inner edge of the top of the frame rails, for exhaust manifold/header clearance.

A 71-76 full size Chevy car steering column is almost a bolt in. Be sure to get the linkage assembly with the cross bar, you'll probably need to modify it but it makes the shifter work properly.

Sometimes it pays big rewards to spend money for the right parts...this is one of those times.

  5. I once ran a 427 in a 63. used the stock rear mount stick bell and rear crossmember. a big hammer made the firewall clear the cyl head. It boted to the stock front side mounts. I did need to trim the frame rail for exhaust manifold clearance.

I'm seeing the exhaust fitment issue it looks like the starter is going to be fun when I have to replace it. I want to spend the money on the truck it's my only vehicle and I want it done right only problem is money is really tight right now

Yep, so is a truck column, I put a 72 floor shift truck tilt in my 66 Suburban, was a 95% bolt in. I did pitch the factory 66 auto linkage and used a Kugel indexable shift lever setup, they work slick.

  8. is it running now? Engine swaps of time to sort out the bugs. My advice if its not broke and its your only transport don't mess with it.

They aren't cheap but you can buy the big block brackets new from the aftermarket truck trinket places.
    One example. https://www.classicparts.com/searchprods.asp
A hundred bucks may save a hell of a lot of fuss and headaches though if you can't find a used pair which may cost just as much rust, dirt grease and all.

I wouldn't have messed with it but the 6 cylinder blew up on my way to a job site I loved the 6 cylinder that's what was in it when my dad got the truck I wanted to keep it as original as possible. I had the 454 so that's why I did it this way.

Pretty sure I got it direct from Kugel but that was in the 90's.
Available through most hot rod suppliers.
I see Flaming river has one sort of like it, I think my Kugel unit was around $30.
Well, looks like Flaming River may own the Kugel kits now,
   $92:eek:.

    Jegs carries them.

A quick Google image search shows a handful plus a lot of good reference material.

So how much do you all think about 500$ to get it back to running driving and about a month maybe 2 to get it reliable again

  15. I cant fathom why anyone with a 66 vehicle only has one vehicle. I always had at least two running and licensed. If you can only afford one 66 vehicle you cant afford a 454 gas hogg and with the stock 66 rear end it will guzzle gas. Go to Wal Mart buy a bicycle to ride to work. save you money and buy a OT reliable daily driver.

I know that 500 sounds great in comparison to buying a new truck

I also have a 85 dodge that needs a wiring harness and a front end and some trans work the 66 was a great truck I drove it back and forth to Tulsa and my dad did the same before I got it so it was a unexpected thing. The rear end has been changed to get better fuel mileage.

From where I live to Tulsa is about a 45min drive so I would say the truck ran good

How fast you get it does depends primarily on how much actual time you have to work on it.
It also depends on having the right pieces on hand when you do the swap.
The correct brackets for the mounts, the correct motor mounts to go with the engine and brackets the auto trans crossmember. Possibly the correct throttle linkage. A radiator that will handle Oklahoma heat with a 454. These guys sell pretty decent radiators if you want aluminum http://www.speedcooling.com/1963_1966_Chevy_Pickup_Truck_Aluminum_Radiator.html I have one of their radiators for my 48 and it is a nice unit.
Things like getting the driveshaft thing done and getting the exhaust done have to wait until the engine is in the truck and you can either be creative or spend the money to have someone else do it.

yea I know the time deal it's been about a month since I started this. I had to pull both engines and I just got the 454 setting in trying to get everything right and mounted I'm building a trans cross member the drive shaft is the perfect length luckily. I'm probably going to buy the after market mounts for the engine.

  23. I used to swap in SBC, BBC into those trucks and I recall little woes, maybe my mind is going. I don't recall buying anything special and used them with the SM420 4-speeds. The last SBC I did I used headers on it, I still have the last BBC I used in a '65 C30, that used stock exhaust manifolds, from a '66 Impala. If this is your DD, it will need some sorting out for sure.

I had it and it only has 60k on it and I know how it was taken care of so I figured it would be the way to go at least until I have the money to rebuild the straight 6 numbers matching #s engine

  26. I could bolt that big block in the 66 truck in a day using the stock 6 cyl bell and trans and the 6 cyl frame mounts. Use a BFH on the firewall in a couple spots and trim the frame for exhaust clearance. I actually been there & done that way back in the early 1970,s I put a 427 in a 63 short bed. I did not like it and went back to a 283 pretty quick. A 293 requires a different frame mount on the passenger side. The 292 has larger flywheel bolts. A 292 is Heavy and likes to drink fuel. I own probably 40 - 64 thru 66 chevy & GMC trucks at this very moment. and I like a 250 six or a 283 in them the best. with a stick or powerglide trans. they ride and drive as good as anything on the road. a big block makes them nose heavy and harder to steer. very few have power steering.

  27. I had no clue whether a ‘66 would have a 235 or a 292. Point of my comments was it would be way easier and more cost effective to replace the 6 with another.
Maybe you have a good running 6 he could drop back in?
Interesting to see what the OP decides.

  29. Hey..... at least he hasn’t listed a “for sale” ad in the classifieds, or responded to an ad looking for the “rare wanted part”..... which we see a post about around 3 days later.
I’m still waiting for the ‘57 Paxton Supercharger I bought and paid for from the for sale ads in 2009...... fool me once.
Reading his post, he lives within 45 minutes of Tulsa driving a 6 cylinder powered mid 60’s Chevy truck. To me, that seems genuine enough. He’s looking for advice.
Not everyone reads the “bylaws” before joining and creating a post.

The nice thing about this truck is it's got disc brakes on the fronta power steering It drives and stops pretty good.
