    socal34,
How’s the 34 Pheaton doing and the Inglesse Deuce?
Great cars there. Dale says hello;).

Okiedokie, here’s Dale’s Delivery, for some reason I couldn’t get a clearer lower image to load.. 77F2BAF1-CFCC-439F-A872-276786CE8850.jpeg 9C824469-FBCC-46EF-BF52-54EF6FFD7978.jpeg

I know that this one isn’t nearly as famous, but it’s been around forever, was there when both Pete & Jake’s Coupes were going together and the S/B Coupe. It belongs to a Vintage Tin member and 3time build customer of Dale’s Caufeild Automotive-Temple City. 6EB25FC6-AB71-48D7-B98A-9D30BCCEBD42.jpeg AB74FB05-6EB4-47B5-9864-110F44B117C4.jpeg 71753826-8172-4962-A773-9CE895524AE2.jpeg D776E1C9-8155-4E76-8ACD-2B7B7D0F57C8.jpeg So I had some period pix of it in its different builds by Dale....They won’t load??????

Fantastic thread Kevin. I am so interested in this time period of cars. It is interesting that the famous cars weren't all rust free originals without dents and surprises. They were regular old hot rods when they began. This thread supplements The Pete and Jake book I have had since it came out. I was a spectator at Americruise '93. I saw most of these cars there. Looking forward to any more information you share!

  8. Thanks for posting Dale's stories. Some stuff I've read about, some no, but nice from the person who was at the bottom of it all.
I enjoyed the articles of Thom Taylor's delivery in R&C when they came out; just shocking that it was over 25 years ago, already.

Glad that you did the drive. I’m not positive, but did your Tub have spokes on it in 1989??? If so I have a pic of it an NSRA Appreciation Day at Lake Castaic I believe????;).

History in the making. I grew up with the cars these guys were building. People like Jim Miles and Les Eurbin were builders in N. Ca. I also followed.

Thank you Kevin for starting this thread, and thanks to everyone for the kind words. That was a fun time to be involved with hot rods. That was at the beginning of the rebirth of home built, street driven hot rods, before so many IMG_20170906_075742.jpg 20150919_125350.jpg IMG_20170906_075742.jpg 20150919_125350.jpg of us became involved with it as an industry. We were just a bunch of guys building our hot rods. Before the huge rod events like the Street Rod Nats.

I still tend to lean towards the build styles that were popular at that time for my cars.

I'm sorry for not chiming in earlier but, I have been pretty busy preparing for our crosscountry move. I know a few of you have wondered what I am driving thg these days so I will attempt to post a couple pics. Of course there's my 40 Delivery tnat Kevin posted the pic of from last years Hot Rod Hill Climb and is my avatar. Then there's my 27 tub, which I finished in 2000, and the car that started it all for me, the 34 coupe that I bought in 1968 at the age of 15. It is in the middle of a total rebuild that has also been put on hold because of the move.

Where'd you find that pic Kevin. That car was built in the late 80" at the height of the "smoothie" craze. Built out of a clapped out 5 window body. Every panel on that car was modified except the rear fenders.

  22. Man, I wish I'd lived in SoCal in the 70s. All those cool old fords and hot rod careers being built.
I also was at the '93 Americruise with my 49 ford coupe. Thom Taylor and P-Wood were cruising the R&C black 36 delivery all over the grounds and every single time we'd pass each other Taylor would lean out the window and holler:
"Hey man! You oughta slam that thing, primer it and put polished Americans on it!" Must have done that 7-8 times over the weekend . BYW, I just had my '93 Americruise jacket dry cleaned. Looks like new again

We drove there together, I was part of the Brizio Tour as was Thom & P-Wood. We met up with Jake and Tony Thacker in Salt Lake City. B6119919-03F4-4D88-82B5-B7B1CB6D3E7E.jpeg
I wore out my very vintage set of Dirt Track Tires driving at speeds those tires never should have seen.
(Was hoping to one day have them recapped) still have them after that ride 26 yrs ago. ;). 8DBF7A9C-FE96-4CD6-A2A5-5B206A4BD22C.jpeg The reason I bring this up is that Thom was trying to get one of the tire companies to make or find me a set of tires that would work on the 16” American 5 spokes
I drove home on those skins....it took 23 yrs to find a set that would look right on those wheels D843CAAE-858D-4410-A0AE-6ADFA4D0FB12.jpeg Now a nice set of Firestone DT’s can really make an impact on a young Hot Rodder who was bound & determined to get one of those Caulfield, P&J’s, &
Lobeck styled Hot Rods. (Never thought that I’d be able to have one let alone the ones that I’ve been able to acquire of these many years). 6F22F594-FAFE-493A-8F0A-51CC0B313D65.jpeg
Even this “In Progress Likefire” Build at Pete’s So-Cal wears a set is getting an attitude.

Yup, it was pretty darn kool being on that 1st R&C Americruise. “Thom was really fun on that Run” ;).

Brotha, you lived it !!!!! ;). Dale gave all of us “color n history”. Your Dad being a VT member, pals of the guys mentioned and even having several iconic Hot Rods over 50+ years of knowing these guys and seeing all of this happening “live” is also a part of this Dale Caufeild Historic Rod Run down R&C’s memory lane.

  26. Yeah, he and P-wood were both "fun" alright

Ok, it’s been a couple of weeks. Have been talking to Dale, George Wilson, Gary/Scott Lorenzini and a few other guys that were around when all of these iconic Caulfield Automotive Colored Cruisers that IMHO put the “Hot” back into Hot Rodding at a time when “Resto Rods” we’re all the rage.
I mean that when people of the “Baby Boomer” Generation talk Hot Rods, these cars come up.

Not all are into “Flames” others aren’t into scallops and don’t even bring the 90’s term “Sclames”.
Hard core Hot Rodders just freak!!!!
So this brings me to a topic of What if Pete Never would’ve bought that former Lakes job and Jake wouldn’t have happened upon the 4 34 3W’s that he found and would’ve gone a different route with his P/U, but still utilizing Dale’s talent’s???????

Well that brings us to these study’s in PS imagery.
I roped in a very worthy talent for this exercise. We all know him by the name “Stogy” and this just being a “What If?” I feel gets the idea out there.
So we all know if you’ve followed any P&J’s 34’s incarnations that there have been slight “changes” over time. My gosh, it’s nearly 50 yrs.!!!!!!

That brings us to 3 different versions- all 6 are 28-29 Closed Cab P/U’s all wear P&J’s livery on the stakes which P&J’s started in 74, but the idea was brewed about the time these cars were being built which included Eric Vaughn as well and we all know Eric has a thing for 32 Stake Trucks....;).

So let’s just say Dale applies his Syphon feed air sprayer to these????

    ———————————————————————-

Now Stogy did a “Freakin Great Job” on changing these pix all around. All we need is Whodaki to put em on a R&C Barn Shot Cover similar to their 1973 issue.
So this “What If” Could really become a reality for any Ambitious HAMBer out there. Dale Would have ya squirt em in Henderson TN. though, as that’s where he’s pick’n up to.
