Hey guys. This might be a stupid question, but I'm torn on what color to paint the 409, block and heads. I'm putting it in my 62 belair. NOT an original 09 car and not trying to make it look like one. Kinda goin for a 60s fastest car in town look. Like someone would have put it together to be cool and fast. Right now I have a small block painted gold, which I like, but not sure the 409 would be cool gold. Thoughts?

Very nice Belair, been a fan since, well....
There's really no wrong color (except blue ). But there's only one right color. But you knew that!

Ha! Thanx. I built them. Did all the exhaust actually. Just 3 inch pipe with header collector flanges welded on. Pretty simple actually.

Chevy orange if you are trying for the looks of the fastest street car in town in the 60's. Hard core guys then would have wooped your butt in the middle of the burger joint parking lot for painting it some other color then. If you were putting it in something else that was a hot rod or gasser than that may not apply but in those days you wanted it to look like it belonged there.
I remember that in 1964 I was working on the engine in the little car I had then and wanted what was close to the correct color and asked my mom and sister to pick me up a can when they went on a shopping trip and they came back with black rather than olive green because they thought the black matched the color of the car better and didn't clash. Still to this day don't like black painted engines.

go for the cast iron look: Dupli-color Cast Coat Iron Ceramic Engine Spray Paint - that will look better than the must use factory color or black dilemma - no to gold

If you want the go-fast look from '60's, paint with chev orange, don't mask anything, even spray over grease.
Go fast guys just covered it....wanted to go fast.

I wouldn't do that, your car is too nice, but that's what they did back then

Ok. So orange it is! Ha! I guess the thing that got me thinking is, I went to the back to the 50s and saw quite a few 409 cars. BUT the engines were always restored to ORIGINAL! And I thought it was kinda boring. Don't get me wrong, I can appreciate an original car, but I have always been drawn to the hot rod side of things. I would love to do some finned aluminum valve covers, but at about 400 bucks, that ain't gonna happen. I'm still building the motor and that money could be spent elsewhere. Just trying to get away from the original look.

  28. I did mine in a universal gold and finned aluminum Moon valve covers. Pardon the dust. I was working in the garage and forgot my truck wasn't covered up. 348 drivers side1.JPG
