I would like to run a windshield sun visor (the one over the windshield, not the ones inside the car) on my '56 Olds, but they just don't seem to exist in the market today, so I'm down for making one. Does anyone know where there might be a guide, how-to, etc. on fabricating such a part? I think the originals were sometimes made from fiberglass or similar plastic back in the day, but I'm expecting to make one from 18 or 20ga sheetmetal with stainless trim. Any pointers would be appreciated.
I assume you do not have access to one to borrow and make patterns. So, start cutting up cardboard and taping it together until you get something pleasing to your eye. If you can limit the curve to one plane you won't need an English Wheel or power hammer to put compound curves in it. You might make a rough form out of 1/4" steel rod. For the trim, maybe aluminum strip polished. Or McMillan makes some sweet stainless strips. I haven't seen enough visors to offer any mounting tips.
