I just received my intake that I have been waiting on for months from Hot Heads and it is exactly what I was promised, a direct bolt dual plane for my 330 Desoto. Now comes the hard part, choosing a finish. The block is gloss black hardened enamel with chrome bits. I am not sure on air cleaner yet but I see something black and chrome with some striping on it.

a couple of views, you cant see it well but the valley pan is chrome plated.

I have to trim a couple of superfluous mounting bosses form the MSD distributor so it can rotate freely but other than that it is a great fit and should be quite a runner. Note the integral water housing that accepts a SBC thermostat housing. Temp sensor/water fitting on each side in back. They even included a threaded vent to burp the air out of the system if needed. Thank you to Hot Heads once again for making a Desoto buildable.

So cast your votes and provide your comments. I'm listening.

I voted for as cast, I prefer the contrast with the chrome valve covers.

@Bandit Billy ......Beautiful engine! You really can’t go wrong with whatever you decide.

Over the years I have bought parts from HH and had them rebuild a couple/few sets of rocker shafts. Have always been happy with them.

I was at the NSRA Nats and had a chance to visit with Bob for the first time in person. What a friendly guy and quite a hoot! Really enjoyed talking with him.

He also had on hand the newly cast 4 bbl for the low deck Dodge engines. Will be ordering one or two of those.......

  7. I vote for black. 'Back in the day' a single carb intake on these would be OEM cast iron and painted to match the rest of the motor. The HH intakes also have a 'modern' look about them, going with black will minimize that.

Not intended as an insult but that intake manifold is kinda ugly. The hard edges give it a very modern appearance.

My vote is black or anything to draw attention away from it with a large chrome air cleaner of some sort.

Billy, given your attraction to the shiny stuff, I see a polished manifold in your future.

  10. Yea!!!! Billy got a “what color” thread started !!!!!

    That manifold is not pretty,
Very utilitarian looking lacking the smooth Art Deco desoto period influences.

I'd like to see the FIRE-DOME letters RED for a little pop factor! The black ain't doin' that beautiful mill justice!

Agreed. El Scotto said it right...I'd do it up in black, also.

My 276" DeSoto had a 2 bbl intake, but DeSoto intakes were cast as either 2 bbl or 4 bbl. (large flange makes it possible for 4 bbl open top plenum...just some millin' and drillin'.)
276" mills are sufficient for nice little '27 Ts, so the low profile stock manifold with 600 Holley will be more than enough.
Oh, mine's going black (block, heads, intake) I'm polishing that aluminum up front, and have a finned valley cover (polished)
Your 330 will 'gleam', no matter what you do. Beauty!

I would love to meet these guys. They have been excellent to work with and it may be top secret but they have a 2X4 desoto manifold in the finishing stages that will also take (wait for it) a blower using a two piece intake they cast. I didn't use it because I figure at street RPM the dual plane will suit me better than a common plenum.

My thoughts exactly last night when I unboxed it. I though black might disguise it and make it go away a bit. This truck will have a hood, you aint gonna see it unless I show you.

All the other cool kids did it! I'm leaning toward black powder coat, in fact I called a local powder puff guy yesterday who said he coats right over the cast, adds a primer coat then the color, turns out nice says he and the rough cast gives the powder something to bite to. My chrome guy said for 100 beans he will knock it down and make it a lot smoother for the powder. Worth it? I mean I didn't smooth the block. This aint in an open engine bay.

It is my engine but I like the input. In the end I do what I like but it doesn't hurt asking people their opinions…as long as it is not about hanging your arm out the window, locking your car at cruise ins or if you look to see if people are looking at you.

I had a buddy last night in the shop who had the same idea. If the manifold was more vintage looking I would save the money but burying it under some black powder coat may help disguise the sleeper.

Well, the timing cover isn't black. (edit) kinda digging the polished look too, after reading the lifter valley is shiny.

Surprised you even asked , shiny black like the motor with a chrome air cleaner will fit the scheme under the hood rather nicely!

Leave it as cast for now.... Wait a few years.. once it starts getting dingy, then take it off clean and paint it....

My 291 Hemi was painted like the rest of the engine. I let the valve covers do the "look at me , look at me " thingy bob.

    There's one I hadn't thought of

That's a picture I may have trouble erasing from my memory.

I like that option the best but as fate would have it, the exit polling has a different leader.

  29. I'm the guy that always paints his manifolds, while my peers always leave theirs "as cast." Time and time again, driven and used ... mine still look good painted, while theirs ... don't look so good, "as cast" . I'm even paint aluminum heads. I'm a lone survivor.

Engine looks great, so my first thought was to replace the manifold with a blower manifold and a 671 and do it all justice. But then, Im not know for making rational decisions
