I am going to replace a seal in the power steering box on a 1954 Chrysler New Yorker, and have the column jacket already removed. My question is how does one remove the steering shaft itself from the box? It looks like there is a pin in there, but my feeble brain can't find it in the factory service manual. Anybody out there familiar with these?
Looks like the one in my Lincoln, the pin appears to go through at the flat to round transition. The book probably says to remove from car as one piece then you can get to the pin. I had to replace my box 3 times and didn't want to take out everything ,so I knocked the pin out inside the car. Warning there is rubber in the joint so support the joint as you knock it out or devise a pin pusher
Ok, got it apart, the pin was in there pretty tight, and was sort of rounded on the end (both ends actually, but it was obvious which end had been driven or pressed in). I used a C-clamp to push it out. I ground some relief on the end of a 1/4" collar on the recieving side, and ground the C-clamp screw down to size, after trying to keep something centered on it. That did not work worth a hoot. Here is a shot of the collar I ground and used.
