I did a search and couldn't find any topics on this being the 85th anniversary of Henry's 1934 Ford. They're celebrated for the 32 and for the 40 so why not for the 34, another iconic hot rod platform. I'm sort of prejudiced but I feel the 34 is one of the best looking cars that Henry came out with. Not to dis on the 32 but the defining factor is that beautiful grill that the 34 wears.
Here's mine, it's old and has it's bruises but is still presentable in it's 50 year old paint job.

    Hello,

One of our closest friends had a 1934 Ford 5 window coupe. He was the first guy to have a hot rod build of all those in my brother’s friends’ group. It had a big Olds motor and did well at Lions Dragstrip in the A/Gas and B/Gas classes. As a young teen, I was impressed with the sloping grille and the look the 5 window coupe had coming down the street. That was also my first, fast hot rod ride.
    upload_2019-8-11_3-49-15.png early 1959
My brother was envious of his friend’s hot rod build and wanted a car to match or beat the times at Lions. He never said a bad word about his friend’s 34 coupe, but deep down inside, he wanted a fast car to race and be victorious. When he saw the Oldsmobile Sedans of Harryman/Edwards, Doug Cook, Gene Adams and Tim Woods, he knew he could have a fast Oldsmobile Sedan and still carry the requisite 4 people when cruising.

Being friends, they never raced the 51 Olds vs 34 Ford Coupe, or the 58 Impala vs the 34, or even the 40 Willys with the 283 SBC and Strombergs vs the Olds powered 34 coupe.

There was no getting around the fact that the 34 coupe had style and with that sloping grille and stance, it already looked like it was cutting through the misty fog that usually rolled into the Westside of Long Beach and Lions in the afternoon/evening.
upload_2019-8-11_3-52-27.png similar look for the street

Eventually, that A/Gas-B/Gas 34 Ford Coupe saw the light of day with the advent of fast Willys Coupe of Pittman/Edwards, Junior Thompson’s Studebaker and Doug Cook’s 37 Chevy Coupe. At the time, it was still the pop the hubcap and go racing days. But, we could already see the advantage of speed shop/parts manufacturers, cam grinder support and such, in these classes. So, our friend’s 1934 Ford Coupe turned into one of the fastest street hot rods and daily drivers in Long Beach.

Jump up many years later and the 34 far surpassed the popularity of any 32 in our neck of the woods. Even my wife liked the 34 look over the somewhat, boxy look of the 32. When we saw a black 1934 sedan in San Diego for a photo shoot, my wife said that would be a hot rod she would drive every day.

Jump up quite a number of years later and when we saw a chopped, outstanding, red paint, 34 Ford Sedan with yellow flames, I immediately got drawn to it. My wife looked at the hot rod and said something like, “nice flames” and walked on. Later, she said that chopped top would make her feel like being stomped on top of her head. My, how times have changed…

    Hey Sheldon,

Wow, Long Beach to France is a long way, away. Nice to see you are still around and having fun with cars. It has been a long time. Boy, we are all getting older, too fast. Thank you from those times way back then, with all of the introductions to the hot rod core of friends. Those breakfasts and picnics were the basis for “gathering of the tribes” as done, today. It brings back plenty of great memories of those past times…

I noticed that my old Jr High School and High School friend is in the latest version of the Early Times Club with his 32 Ford. Russ Jameson was one of the best basketball players out of our Westside neighborhood. He was a star. We played together in high school, but he played, I kept the bench warm. It was hard for a 5'7" guard going against the local, high school 6'6" players, his height helped him do it well. I was like a fly against a giant. I usually sat until the score was outrageous, then I got my chance.

Russ was a good player with height and ability. LB Poly HS was a tough place and we all had our portion of the sports activities with some success... I was eventually happy with starting on the varsity football team, during which I grew to 5’11”. With that height, I could have been more competitive in basketball, but stuck with varsity football and now, hot rods. Around 1966, we met again at the Belmont Shore Peninsula. He lived across the street (East Ocean Blvd) from my girlfriend/soon to be wife and her roommate.

Those Belmont Shore beach cottages and apartments were the coolest back then. It was the low cost, steps from the Bay and sandy shoreline of the Ocean that was the allure. Plus, outside on Ocean Blvd, the hot rods and cars full of girls always cruised by during the year in search of beach parking. Those rare times, finding parking for the Peninsula beaches and the across the street at Alamitos Bay was a challenge.

It was unfortunate that we lost contact with most of our old friends from back then. Take care and maybe we will meet again, someday. We were in France in 1970 for a week out of a 40 day European vacation, it sure has changed since then.

    Hey G,

Yes, that red 34 coupe with the front wire wheels was hard to walk away from, whether it was in the pits at Riverside Raceway in 1959 or the Bakersfield Smokers March Meet #2, racing. It was one impressive coupe. If my brother and I built another race car after our 1940 Willys Coupe, it was going to be a modified roadster or a 34 coupe like the one owned and raced by Jim Miles.

Hope you like the flashback from 1959 and 1960. Who was there back then? There were some very interesting and hot modified race car/drivers just starting their long careers.

I don't think Henry had much to do with anything after the model A. Edsel added style NOT Henry.

My 34 five window built many years ago by the late Rod Von Auron - he built it well, the paint is over 25 years old and everything works as it should. IMG_1741 (1).jpg

I whole heartily agree. Deuces, 40's are the greatest and 34's are the max, the best of the three. 0717171012a.jpg I've been a baaaad boy.

flameabone I came across a picture of your 34 long before I was finished with mine. I posted a large pic of it in my shop at that time for inspiration and named it with ''my" name, calling it
"Invader". Man you have got the touch.:D
