I wish GM had offered Hallibrand knockoffs in those days. It was a sports car and I wish they had wheels deserving of a sports car.

  5. Looks a bit like this one, same wheels and rear brake Cooling scoop.

Scotty, the car you pictured is a tribute to a 56 SR (Sebring Racer allegedly what SR stands for). I saw it come up for auction and it sold I believe for a little less than $100,000. Of course if it was the real deal you would have to add a zero at the back and another number in front. John Neas who is a pretty serious collector from Oklahoma owns what I believe is the only 56 SR and I believe it is brown. The scoop is a giveaway.

I suppose I could try and track down the claims on the windshield with some of the records I have but the road cars are not my expertise and I do not want to speculate-plus it would take too long to look through the records. Whatever it is a cool car and if I owned a Sebring racer of any vintage it is one Corvette that I would keep "stock" (including a big brake car of any solid axle vintage).

Jim, that GM contract must have been pretty lucrative for Halibrand.
Can you imagine stumbling onto a crate of NOS Sebring wheels in a dusty back room at the GM skunkworks.

Doug, I have told the story before but the first real sports car I saw up close was a Ferrari Berlinetta in the late 50s (a friend of my grandfather). I was probably more star struck with the sound but the whole car was a work of art, especially for a young kid. The shape, sound and wheels and tires were all perfect IMO. The next car to hit me between the eyes I suppose was a red 62 Corvette fuelie (in 1962) with off road exhaust and dog dish caps and black walls. Although I can appreciate wide whites on some 50s Corvettes, I still prefer black walls and I will never be a fan of hubcaps with a pretend knockoff in the center. For me personally they do not belong on a true sports car-it is just one of those personal deals I suppose. A real knockoff though is another story altogether.

  9. Jim I was looking for a pic of the John Neas car but I couldn't remember whose it was or what it was called.

That's it. John is a good guy and also owns a couple or a few old time front engined dragsters.

Yep, John is well into front motor diggers. He currently has the Jim Dunn "Rainbow" car, the Tony Nancy "Sizzler", the Bennie Osborne car, the Jimmy Nix repop and Cory Conyers is finishing up the bodywork on the K & G Speed Associates car for him.

1956 National Championship Drag Races. Chevrolet Corvettes square off in the Sports Car division. M.V. Waterfield's black 1956 starts at a deficit to Jack Jenkins' 1955 (55??) Jenkins goes on to win the day.

Enloe, I really dig the pictures of your car still in your parents garage! Did you completely go through the car or is that the same paint job as it was in the garage! Thanks again for posting

It’s the same white laquer as when my dad bought it.
It has quite a few character flaws. It was originally a yellow car but it was white when he got it. There was a place on the drivers side quarter panel that had to be fixed when he got it.
