Back in the early 60's Gary Wright in Brisbane built a channeled 32 Ford roadster. Dark blue with a Y-block it was the quintessential 60's style hot rod. I first saw the car at the Hot Rod Show maybe around 63 or so. I was already into hot rods but this car was an inspiration to me. Not sure what dates but Gary sold the car to George Kotevich in Sydney. At some point George had an accident when someone ran a red light and the car was severely damaged. George rebuilt the car with a 289 Ford and painted it maroon. At some point in someone elses ownership the car ended up getting dismantled and parts went every which way I think. Now enter Michael Morris. Michael started an authentic restoration of the roadster in 2003. Finished this year the roadster has been well received at various shows. An incredible effort. Gary Wright was heavily involved with Michael getting the car just right as per its mid 60's build. Recently Michael reunited George Kotevich with the car after all these years. https://kustomrama.com/wiki/Gary_Wright's_1932_Ford
Interesting thing for me is that until the feature on the car in ASR recently I never knew it was a rod in Qld...............for me the 1st knowledge of the car was when George Kotevich had it and it appeared on the cover of Custom Rodder with the 289 and painted maroon.........I started getting into cars and hotrods around 1965/66 at 11 or 12......so I'm a little younger..........I hope..........lol...........anyway its a neat car .....andyd.
Yep a great car saw it at Melbourne hot rod show in January car of the show for me ,made me want to build my roadster channeled
That is one faithful restoration...compliments to the Restoration Team and the Owner... Thanks for sharing that @hudson48
Nice! Can I add the photos you have shared to the page we have on the car on Kustomrama? Looks like it is due for an update now
This pic is from the Melbourne Hot Rod Show this year. That car should have had pride of place i.e.just inside the front door of the Exhibition Buildings and not in some nondescript spot down the back of the hall. The organisers stuffed up there as this is a perfect example of early Aussie hot rod history and a car that every Aussie kid yearned for back in the 60's. Channelled 32 roadsters -East Coast style- are a thing of the past unfortunately as nowadays everyone builds highboys but plays around with the chassis trying to get them as low as and looking like a channelled car.
I was inspired and started with a channelled Model A roadster back in 1968. A bought car but later put my own ideas into the car. Come 2012 and a mid life crisis and relive my youth this time with a 32 Ford roadster as I could no longer fit in a Model A.
Great story, love the Roadster. And your Gold Roadster is WAY Cool, I love everything about it. Well done!
