definition: A large hole in the garage that the owner throws money and time.

At least the boat is all inclusive, everybody goes including half the neighborhood. The kids remember the time on the boat fondly, your time in the shop is your time in the shop.

I no longer have a car.i seem to be working more,my priority is getting ready for retirement,I'm 59.my son has taken the torch and when I can ,I go by his place and hang out with him and help him with his stable of one finished car and two projects that are 70% done....he reminds me of myself when I was his age(35).

  4. Just retired. Cleaning out some projects got some cars for sale. Cleaned and organizing the tools. Bought a window A/C and installed it in the back wall. Getting ready for the next frame off build. I will probably die in the shop under a car

It's all a cost/benefit analysis. How much pain is an achievement worth? As we get older we get real good at deciding when and where to conserve and when and where to spend our energy and pain.

    Same age, same attitude.
Why do weekend jobs now take all week to do - and why do things weigh so much more these days?

Turned 70 last month I keep asking the wife why I get tired doing what used to be little things. She says you turned 70 last month. I ain't buying it but there's got to be something to it.
I built the custom that I dreamt of since I was a kid, love it but it hurts my back to get into it. It hurts to get down on the floor to clean it, I could go on but you get my point. So it's listed in the classifieds here. I bought me a model A I've had a few over the years, keeping it a banger. Easy to work on all around fun cars.
On a side note while helping with an Estate sale I picked up a used Walker for a friend of mine to use in his shop, you know the kind with the seat. He's my age and I noticed him having a time getting up and down while working on cars. He uses the heck out of that thing when doing bodywork zips around the shop without having to get up and down moving his chair. I gotta find me one next I guess.

I’ll be 71 in November and yes I have slowed down, my bad knee and hip are taking a toll on me. I need to get my daughters car done. I haven’t touched it in months, between working on the convertible and house remodeling.

With me it's not so much a hobby or an enjoyable activity........it's an obsession. I do spend a little longer at the computer before getting going, otherwise I'm either at my shop or wishing I was. When I'm out there, it's like workaholic mode- I never stop. I take a big cup of tea and forget to drink it. Work on 3 or 4 different projects in one evening. I'm 69, at the end of a day I can't hardly stand up straight. Take a bunch more pills and vow to take it easier tomorrow.

I’m 73, got my 40 coupe in early 2014 and built it from the ground up in 9 months. It’s the car I’ve dreamed about since my teen years. When I’m not driving it, I’m mostly just standing in the shop staring at it ( anyone do that?). I hear ya about losing a little motivation but there’s this big ‘ol shop out there with no projects happening.

  14. Ive been attempting to sell a portion of my hoard. However those who what it don't have any money. and those who have the money would not have it. I have too many irons in the fire. grandchildren, livestock, real estate , and just daily chores like taking a nap interfear with working on a project.

  15. Its too hot for me to cut firewood in the Summer. I can cut wood when its 5 degrees. and one twack with a splitting maul will bust the firewood chunks in very cold temps. We burn about 10 rick every year. A rick is a stack 8 ft long 4 ft high and 18 inch length. that's 1/3 of a cord.

Part of the reward for me is to see my son enjoy driving his hot rod with his friends and passing on the attitude that you can build something cool from little or nothing if you apply yourself.

Here he is cruising at Hot August Nights last night with his friend Al, who has now gotten the hot rod bug. Mission Accomplished!

  18. A word of advice for those of you who have arthritis, cancer, or some other serious illness. Never give up.
In 2000, I was medically retired. I couldn't walk more than 150 ft without a cane or a walker. I had fallen flat out 4 times, causing further injuries including a torn shoulder. I needed a bone marrow transplant, and I still remember replying to one of the specialists on my case, when he asked me to touch my toes, "You mean way down there"?
There was no matching transplant donor available, but I had been searching through medical studies to find any treatment, whether approved or not for my rare bone marrow cancer and fibrosis. I found several small studies in Europe and North America that had a 30% success rate in treating my disease, but the bad side was that the drug had severe side effects, and over 30% of the participants quit because of a toxic reaction. I decided that this was my only option, and although my specialist was initially not willing to approve it, I finally told her I had nothing to lose, and initiated a doctor change. She finally called me back and told me she would administer the drug if I still wanted it.
I started on the drug, and within the first month I showed significant improvement. I have now been on the drug for almost 20 years, my cancer is in control but not remission, but I have 20 years that I otherwise would not have had. I have other significant problems, but I never give up, and enjoy life to the extent I can.
I got to see my two youngest kids grow up, and turned them both into gearheads. I enjoy life my way, in my yard playing with my toys. I do what I can and leave the rest. I am 76, and don't have any quit in me yet.
Life is good. When all else is lost, there is always hope.

I am 84 and a water pump on my flathead went out. So here I am on my back replacing the pump. Need to take care some other things. Just putting it off. I have a motorhome and use to cover it. My wife said I am too old to be walking around the top of the motorhome covering it. I told her I don't think so.

  20. I'm the same way and I just turned 50 :) but my garage OR house doesn't have a/c. I'm planing on retiring in about 5.5 yrs and really getting some work done on things I care about. I also plan on moving somewhere colder with some land for a shop. I'm not really a car show/cruise guy, so building and driving is it for me.......and I like it that way.

  21. At least you have a forklift and something to hook the straps to. My panel can't even fit into the garage, so I'm working on it in the street (driveway is full) :). Great looking burb btw.

Well over the years I have owned several large sailboats which were cruised and also heavily raced and when people asked about the cost I used to tell them “Owning and racing this boat is like standing in a cold shower tearing up $100 bills as fast as you can”.

I think any thing that is raced is a special level of money pit all it's own.

Im in my early 60's but a lot of my buds are in late 70's or early 80's. These guys still have project cars. When they try and sell they are so dang stubborn will not take an offer less than they paid. For gosh sakes at that age get rid of the projects and get 1 great car you will enjoy the rest of your life.

Yeah, well I hope our workmanship doesn't look like his paintings at the end.

Moving to Virginia next year. Our new house has a very large two car garage, 23' X 25'. Coming from a one-car which is really hard to work in. I'm planning on putting a ductless A/C heating unit in it so i can work in it comfortably winter and summer. I'm in the middle of converting my A sedan to a coupe and working on the coupe body in the heat we've had has been brutal. It has definitely taken some of the joy out of it. I told my wife the other day that I just don't want to work on it anymore. I just want to drive it. When the weather cools down a little like in the early morning I am much more motivated.

  29. In the 50's It was about getting the car together, go pick up a girl and ride around town, now it's about the cars. It was never about the cars, it was always about the girls, go get one and ride around town.

It would seem that most of the folks on this thread would rather spend their time complaining instead of working in the garage. If you go out to the shop and just do one thing every day on your project it will get done. I'm closer than I would care to be to 74 and I still have three projects I'm working on. Now shut down the computer and go do something. I'm going out to the shop.
