Event Coverage Mohawk Valley Vintage Dirt Modifieds 2019 season

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Robert J. Palmer, Aug 11, 2019.

  1. The Mohawk Valley Vintage Dirt Modifieds ran Fonda Speedway last night.
There are two classes Vintage and Vintage Antique.

Vintage Antique are for period correct cars with stock frame.
This is real racing not parade laps!

    Legendary cars, legendary track!
You're absolutely right, vintage oval dirt track racing is a hoot. We're lucky enough to have a couple of groups here in MN. The "IMCA Old-Timers" run mostly out of the Mpls/St. Paul area.
    http://www.imcaoldtimers.com/
Another group calls themselves the "H.O.T.R.O.D." (Honoring Old Time Racers On Dirt) tour. They're sort of loosely organized and laid back and do a few dates at local dirt tracks each summer. Not too laid back when they get out on the tracks though, they've been known to bang around a bit and one of 'em even rolled a few years ago going into a turn too hard. I have some action photos in a gallery here: https://www.terrysgarage.com/p58641517
Ask around and you might find a group in your area. If you haven't had the chance to see vintage dirt track racers in action before, do it. Don't mean to de-rail this thread - thanks @Robert J. Palmer for posting the pics!

Great pictures, thanks for posting, love old coaches and coupes. I grew up in Rhinebeck where the county fairgrounds had a dirt track that was a "non-Ford" track in the 50s. Mopar six cylinders and Chevrolet sixes primarily. Just up the street was Gordon Ross Welding who ran a '37 Chevy NASCAR coupe weekly at Agawam, MA. My first hot rod was Ross's old break in car for new motors. He had a '47 Ford tudor he would put new motor in and then push his welding truck with it up and down Route 9. I bought the sedan, the aluminum early Ford to Chev adaptor and angle iron motor mounts welded to cross member to take early Chev V8 motor mounts that bolted alongside the timing cover. Got a '57 283 from Volce Bros down on 9G and rebuilt it with guidance from Gordon. Great memories of the 1950s.

Very cool, I wish the Modified thread could somehow be opened back up again, it was great.

  8. Like I said this is real racing. They are respectful but they run hard.

Mike Cole (Orange Arrow) Won he was running third on the last lap.
Frank Blanchard was leading (Yellow Arrow) going into 3 on the last lap when Tony Kamberelis passed he hit a hole in the middle of the turn and spun.
He just kissed the wall with the left side, Blanchard lifted to avoid him and Mike Cole passed them both to win!

  10. Our next race is Aug. 31 at The Ridge- Glen Ridge Motorsports park in Glen New York, roughly five miles south west of Fonda.

Laurie Fallis is in charge of the M.V.V.D.M. and is doing a great job.

We run nine times a year at five different in the Capital area of New York, we run as part of the weekly track show.

It is free to join the club, each car gets two free pit passes at every show!

    Cool pics thanks.

  12. There were two new cars to the tube chassis class.

The girlfriend of one of the crew had never been to the races or race cars before said "I helped on the car and spent a lot of money to help build it."
I told her "You have only begun to spend money!"

Thanks for sharing. Nothing better than vintage dirt race cars. Pic of my Dad's 1937 Chevy coupe. He built the car and on the first night of racing it was on the trailer going through tech. Everybody said great built car. Passed tech and he backed it off the trailer , 3 drivers went over to the chief steward and said my Dad's car was illegal because it sat to low. Chief steward said it passed. Dad told the other drivers to read the rule book as they modified some rules. H. Sonnenburg ran Chevy coupes and told my Dad that Dad's car sat so low when they were racing side by side he could look over and read the number on the roof. Sorry for long post, and getting off track about your club. Just wanted you to know I share your passion for dirt racing. IMG_20190820_203500259.jpg

  22. Columbus Day Saturday Oct 12 weekend will be the last race of the year for the Mohawk Valley Vintage Dirt Modifieds.
It will be held at Afton Motorsports park with a Short Track Super Series Modified show.

I will be doing the Tech Inspection for Mohawk Valley Vintage Dirt Modifieds. My no overhead valve V8's rule is being met with strong resistance.:D

Afton Motorsports park is a 1/4 mile track half an hour north of Binghamton N.Y. just off exit 7 of I-88
