Tinkering / tearing down... before I chuck this mystery box in the scrap pile, tell me what the previous owner was thinking and do you think along the same wave length... I.E. do you need it?

Looks like a radio mount for an early Corvair.

  5. Definitely a corvair radio mount, I’ve used them before. They can be cut to fit the newer DIN style rectangular radios. They fit a 61-2 Chevy dash very well, the angle of the sides follow the glove box almost perfectly.

Ok... so why mount it behind the rear seat in this 40 then? Previous owner mistake front from rear and front from back?

  7. Out of sight, sort of hidden?

They didn't want to cut a hole in the dash.

Years ago my buddy had a 45 rpm record player on the package shelf of his 40 Coupe. It skipped every time he hit a bump or banged a gear.

Weren’t Corvairs all backwards ? Makes sense really !
Seriously though, - Possibly to be out of sight of thieves, or not to spoil the dash.

  11. Good place to mount radio... so one doesn't cut a BIG FLIPPING HOLE in the dash !

My dad had the same complaint, but I believe the proper use was supposed to be when parked, perhaps watching submarine races

  14. I have seen radios mounted behind the seat before- always seemed like an awkward and impractical place to have one .To each his own

Thanks for all the info guys!! Luckily the dash is intact... I'm currently in the process of rebuilding the stock radio (the one thing that I am good at)... This box is coming out and being placed on the shelf for someone's future project.
