In order to change the weight class of their car, tires were filled with helium causing the pit crew to take usual measures till the car was brought to the line.
Note the iron brackets at the bottom of the door jamb, a leftover from the wagon/buggy days. The wheel or tire would hit or ride up on them so the wheel hub would clear the door jamb. Bob

I don't know for sure but this looks like both racers broke. They used to make them push the car the length of the track to get the win.
Slot car drag racing wizard Bob Braverman on the left. He built home made magnesium frames and wheels and was also a talented modifier of Pittman motors. Six volt armatures on high amp 36 volt battery power, it was the 1/25th scale equivalent of running a 392 on fuel. I spent a lot of time and money doing that when I was 14-15 years old.
