    Hey Dave,
Having sent the early films of Lions drag racing to several friends, I thought I would send one more of the yellow Competition Coupe just to make sure there was some interesting background from Bixby Knolls. Then, I can finally label my short, but historic film clip of one of Bixby Knolls' hometown, drag racing heroes' first or second drag racing machines.

I just got confirmation from Bob Brooks' friend, Bud Rasner. He, Bud, and Tom McEwen grew up in the same Bixby Knolls neighborhood from back in the 2nd grade. They all went to LB Poly HS several years before our time there and in Bixby Knolls. But, they were still running at the So Cal dragstrips during our 58 Impala and 1940 Willys 671 Coupe days in 1960.

They built and ran a flathead dragster, then sold it. Bob Brooks built the yellow Competition Coupe. At that time, McEwen and Rasner ran the red Fiat Altered. But, they also drove the yellow Comp Coupe at one time or another.

Your information and more research pays dividends for labeling my old drag racing films. With the correct information and historic films, the correct label of the owner is good for all of us, that grew up being involved in drag racing, in those hectic early days. (and those guys/girls that like old drag racing from back then.)

Thank you, Dave and Bud Rasner!!!

Garlits at Lions in 1970--most likely the night before the famous transmission explosion that changed the sport (at least a lot faster than it was evolving).

  9. You sure that's LIONS Roo? That old beat down chain link fence sure looks like San Gabe to me. I can't believe they let us stand not 6 feet from engines and clutches that could explode.

Dean, I was relying on this shot for reference purposes with Ewald having it captioned as Lions and as I understand San Gabe was long gone by 1970.

They always came to the end when there was a crash...looks like they are examining the unopened chute.

Scoville Brothers A/GR from Sherman Oaks, CA, at the '57 NHRA Nationals, where they won class. They later dropped their engine into Ivo's Buick-powered Fuller car to set a 159mph gas dragster record at Riverside.

The Greer, Black, Prudhomme car later in its racing life. After being sold by Greer it was campaigned by the Reno Auto Wrecking team but not with the paint/graphic package seen in this photo.
I did find this shot of it as raced by the Reno guys.

As to Bob’s post, I attended those Races at Castlereigh, as a member of the Ace of Clubs hot rod club with another member Stew Gray we helped were we could be of use & glad to do it.
For me personally it inspired me & l think a lot of others to build race cars, BEST THING SINCE SLICED BREAD!
Those guys put on a great show + the FED’s they bought down to Australia! AMAZING!

I still think that the 60’s, the early days was the best in drag racing for ingenuity in designs & equipment, where regular guys where able to build & race at their local tracks.
I’ll never forget what l saw back then, just like it was yesterday. Thanks Guys!
