Whatever became of Doug Marion? I became familiar with his name beginning in the
early '80s when he was writing for Super Chevy magazine. I eventually stopped reading
that magazine and LB's posting of this pic piqued my curiosity. Marion would briefly
mention his history with early drag racing Chevys.

Richard Petty's supercharged Cuda flashes down the strip here in this picture made just an instant before the vehicle veered off the track and into the crowd. Petty's car plunged into the spectators just left of the pole at right.

One 8 year old boy who was hit by a wheel that came off the car. Seven others including the child's father were injured.

Was this the same car that ran as Al DeSalvo's "Spartacus" for many years ????

 

Yes it crashed at the grove during a mopar weekend. Denny Guest restored the car back to it's original racing configuration before al got ahold of it. I was right there when the car tossed a rod and oiled the tires. To fix the car the frame was cut at the fire wall. Everything forward was replaced. That's alot of expensive aluminum that got destroyed.
